Abstract
Devices and methods for novel retinal irradiance distribution modification (IDM) to improve, stabilize or restore vision are described herein. Also encompassed herein are devices and methods to reduce vision loss from diseases, injuries and disorders that involve damaged and/or dysfunctional and/or sensorily deprived retinal cells. Conditions that may be treated using devices and methods described herein include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Therapy provided by retinal IDM devices and methods described herein may also be used in combination with other therapies including, but not limited to, pharmacological, retinal laser, gene and stem cell therapies.
Claims12
An apparatus for improving or restoring vision of an eye having a preferred retinal locus of fixation, the apparatus comprising one or more components configured to be positioned anterior to a retina of the eye and to redirect environmental light within an ocular field of view away from the preferred retinal locus of fixation of the eye to a plurality of retinal locations that are not the preferred retinal locus of fixation, and the apparatus not producing corneal vitrification.
An apparatus for improving or restoring vision of an eye having a preferred retinal locus of fixation, the apparatus comprising a lens, the lens configured to be positioned in front of or on the eye and having two or more noncentral, non-annular, and separate modified portions, the two or more noncentral, non-annular, and separate modified portions configured for directing laser light or non-laser ultraviolet light to modify a structure within the eye, the modified structure configured for redirecting environmental light within the ocular field of view away from the preferred retinal locus of fixation to a plurality of retinal locations that are not the preferred retinal locus of fixation, and the apparatus not producing corneal vitrification, wherein a first value of a radius of curvature or an index of refraction of each of the two or more noncentral, non-annular, and separate modified portions of the lens differs from a second value of the radius of curvature or the index of refraction characterizing at least one additional portion of the lens.
