Claims20
A stapling assembly, comprising:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;
- a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples, wherein each said staple comprises a staple diameter;
- and
- an anvil configured to deform said staples, said anvil comprising:
- a tissue-engaging surface;
- and
- forming pockets defined in said tissue-engaging surface, wherein said forming pockets are configured to deform legs of said staples, and wherein said forming pockets comprise:
- a proximal forming pocket, comprising:
- a forming surface, wherein said forming surface comprises an entry zone comprising a first radius of curvature and an exit zone comprising a second radius of curvature;
- sidewalls extending at an angle from said forming surface toward said tissue-engaging surface;
- and
- a groove defined in said forming surface, wherein said groove comprises a rounded cross-sectional profile comprising a diameter less than said staple diameter;
- and
- a distal forming pocket.

A stapling assembly, comprising:
- a first jaw;
- a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw;
- a staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples, wherein each said staple is comprised of a wire having a wire diameter, and wherein each said staple comprises staple legs;
- and
- an anvil configured to deform said staples, said anvil comprising:
- a tissue-engaging surface;
- and
- forming pockets defined in said tissue-engaging surface, wherein each said forming pocket is configured to deform the leg of a said staple, and wherein said forming pockets comprise:
- a proximal forming pocket, comprising:
- a forming surface, wherein said forming surface comprises an entry zone comprising a first radius of curvature and an exit zone comprising a second radius of curvature;
- sidewalls extending between said forming surface and said tissue-engaging surface;
- and
- a tip control channel defined in said forming surface, wherein said tip control channel defines a tip control axis, and wherein said tip control channel comprises a curved cross-sectional profile comprising a diameter less than said wire diameter;
- and
- a distal forming pocket.

- an anvil configured to deform said staples, said anvil comprising:
- a tissue-engaging surface;
- and
- forming pockets defined in said tissue-engaging surface, wherein each said forming pocket is configured to deform a leg of a said staple, and wherein said forming pockets comprise:
- a longitudinal pocket axis;
- a proximal forming pocket, comprising:
- a forming surface, comprising:
- an entry zone comprising a first radius of curvature;
- and
- an exit zone comprising a second radius of curvature;
- and
- a tip control channel defined in said forming surface, wherein said tip control channel defines a tip control axis, and wherein said tip control axis and said longitudinal pocket axis are not parallel;
