Abstract
A method for preloading a bearing includes releasably, threadably, and directly attaching an attaching member to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle. A frame is axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member. A plurality of extensions extends from the frame axially past the attaching member toward the wheel hub assembly. An adjustment mechanism moves the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly to contact the wheel hub assembly and/or the bearing to apply a preload to the bearing within the wheel hub assembly.
Claims14
A lock nut system comprising:
- a nut having interior threads between an axially inner and axially outer surface, a circumferentially aligned slot axially between the inner and outer surface, a shoulder located radially outward from said interior threads and extending circumferentially about said nut, said shoulder axially spaced from said outer surface, said slot located axially between said shoulder and said outer surface;
- said nut threadably engageable with a threaded shaft;
- a keeper having a projection receivable within a slot of said shaft to engage the shaft;
- a retaining member receivable within the circumferentially aligned slot of the nut to engage the nut, and the retaining member extending into a cavity within the keeper when the retaining member engages the keeper;
- and
- wherein when said retaining member is engaged to the keeper and said projection engages said shaft, the retaining member inhibits movement of the keeper relative to the retaining member and inhibits rotational and axial movement of the nut relative to said shaft.
