Abstract
Methods of production of edible filamentous fungal biomat formulations are provided as standalone protein sources and/or protein ingredients in foodstuffs as well as a one-time use or repeated use self-contained biofilm-biomat reactor comprising a container with at least one compartment and placed within the compartment(s), a feedstock, a fungal inoculum, a gas-permeable membrane, and optionally a liquid nutrient medium.
Claims30
A method for semi-continuous or continuous production of filamentous fungal biomass, comprising:
- (a) forming a biomat of a filamentous fungus, the biomat having a mature end;
- (b) recovering a portion of the biomat from the mature end;
- (c) advancing a remainder of the biomat in a direction from which the mature end was recovered;
- and
- (d) forming fresh biomat at an end of the biomat opposite the mature end.
A method for production of filamentous fungal biomass, comprising:
- (a) inoculating a liquid fermentation medium with a filamentous fungus;
- (b) culturing the filamentous fungus to form a cohesive biomass;
- (c) refreshing at least a portion of the liquid fermentation medium;
- (d) culturing the cohesive biomass on the refreshed liquid fermentation medium;
- and
- (e) recovering at least a portion of the biomass.
