## Abstract

An example docking station includes a network interface controller. The network interface controller is to communicatively couple the docking station to a network. The docking station also includes a controller to manage the docking station. The docking station includes a hub communicatively coupled to the network interface controller and the controller. The hub is to communicatively couple to a computing device. The controller is to instruct the hub to use the computing device as a master based on the computing device being communicatively coupled to the hub and to instruct the hub to use the controller as the master based on the computing device not being communicatively coupled to the hub.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of updating a docking station in an enterprise environment, comprising:
transitioning a hub of a docking station from using a computing device as a master to using a docking station controller as the master, the computing device and docking station both within the enterprise environment;
receiving, at the docking station, an update for the docking station while the computing device is disconnected from the hub; and
installing, by the docking station controller, the update on the docking station;
wherein transitioning the hub comprises instructing the hub to enter a reset state, instructing the hub to transition to using the docking station controller as the master, and instructing the hub to exit the reset state.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
entering the docking station into a low power state after transitioning the hub; and
receiving a wake command from a remote device,
wherein receiving the update comprises receiving the update from the remote device after receiving the wake command.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising transmitting docking station capabilities to the remote device after receiving the wake command from the remote device, the docking station capabilities including information usable to determine a version of docking station software.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the wake command is a wake-on-LAN packet from the remote device.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, further comprising:
transitioning the docking station to a full power state after receiving the wake command.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein transitioning the docking station to a full power state transfers only the docking station controller into the full power state without transferring other components of the docking station into the full power state.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
detecting connection of the computing device to the docking station; transitioning the hub from using the docking station controller as the master to using the computing device as the master;
receiving, at the computing device, another update for the docking station; and
installing, by the computing device, the other update on the docking station.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the hub is communicatively coupled to both a network interface controller and the docking station controller, and wherein the network interface controller couples the docking station to a network.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, further comprising:
transitioning the network interface controller from using a computing device as a master when the computing device is coupled to the hub to using a docking station controller as the master when the computing device is uncoupled from the hub.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The method of claim 8, wherein the docking station includes one or more component controllers configured to control one or more peripheral devices connected to the docking station.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, further comprising:
determining which component of the of the docking station is to receive the update via the docking station controller.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the components of the docking station include:
the docking station controller;
the one or more component controllers;
the network interface controller; and
the hub.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein hub is a universal serial bus (USB) type hub.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
sensing, via the docking station controller, whether the computing device is connected to the hub via a sense pin within the hub.

### Claim 15

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
detect disconnection of a computing device from a docking station, the computing device and docking station both within an enterprise network environment;
instruct a hub of the docking station to enter a reset state;
instruct the hub to configure itself to use the processor as a master such that the docking station can receive and install updates from a remote device while the computing device is disconnected from the docking station, wherein the hub was configured to use the computing device as the master prior to the disconnection of the computing device; and
instruct the hub to exit the reset state.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the instructions are to cause the processor to:
instruct the hub of the docking station to enter a reset state using a first bus, and
communicate with the hub as the master using a second bus.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the instructions cause the processor to enter a low power state after causing the processor to instruct the hub to exit the reset state.

### Claim 18 (depends on 15)

The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the instructions cause the processor to receive a request for docking station capabilities from a remote device, report docking station capabilities to the remote device, and receive an update from the remote device.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the instructions cause the processor to install the update on a docking station component.
