Abstract
Adhesive damping systems are described. A damping system for reducing the effects on a substrate caused by a disruption in the substrate environment includes an adhesive having a plurality of three-dimensional particles dispersed therein. The particles are configured to provide a controlled response to an applied force field. The system further includes a sensor which measures an amplitude and frequency spectrum of the disruption. In a use configuration, the sensor determines the amplitude and frequency spectrum of the disruption received by the substrate; and the applied force field is dependent on the amplitude and frequency spectrum of the disruption.
Claims12
A damping system, comprising:
- an adhesive component comprising a backing and an adherent on at least one side of the backing, the adherent being configured to adhere to a substrate;
- and
- a plurality of a first type of three-dimensional particles dispersed within the adherent and a plurality of a second type of three-dimensional particles dispersed within the backing, the particles being physically displaced in response to an applied energy;
- wherein:
- at least one of the first type of three-dimensional particles and the second type of three-dimensional particles has a three-dimensional structure of a spheroidal molecule or a geodesic dome;
- the first type of three-dimensional particles and the second type of three-dimensional particles are physically displaced by compressing from a natural state in response to the applied energy and subsequently expanding to the natural state;
- and
- the applied energy is selected from the group consisting of a sound wave, an electromagnetic wave, a seismic wave, a change in temperature, a change in pressure, and a physical impact.

- a plurality of three-dimensional particles dispersed within the adherent, the particles being physically displaced in response to a disruption;
- and
- a sensor measuring an amplitude and frequency spectrum of the disruption received by the substrate;
- wherein:
- the particles are configured as a spheroid or a geodesic dome;
- the particles are physically displaced by compressing and expanding;
- and
- the disruption is selected from the group consisting of sound waves, electromagnetic waves, seismic waves, changes in temperature, changes in pressure, and physical impacts.
