Queue processor for document servers

A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a set of computer-executable instructions executable to process documents received at a facsimile server in an environment that comprises the facsimile server, a plurality of document transport modules, and a queue processor, the set of computer-executable instructions comprising instructions for:

• implementing a document queue for maintaining a plurality of pending documents received by the facsimile server;
• placing the documents received at the facsimile server in the document queue;
• evaluating the number and type of pending documents in the document queue;
• evaluating system resources of the facsimile server;
• implementing a plurality of document flows, each document flow comprising a component configurable to process documents received at the facsimile server;
• configuring, by the queue processor, each document flow of the plurality of document flows to handle a particular type of document;
• determining whether there is an efficient allocation of implemented document flows based on the evaluation of the number and type of pending documents in the document queue and the evaluation of system resources of the facsimile server;
• allocating, by the queue processor, the plurality of document flows based on a resource utilization of the facsimile server and based on the evaluated number and types of pending documents in the document queue to create a set of allocated document flows, the allocating of the plurality of document flows including increasing or decreasing, by the queue processor, a number of document flows that manage processing of documents from the document queue, each document flow in the set of allocated document flows associated with at least one document transport module from the plurality of document transport modules;
• retrieving a first document of a first type from the document queue using a first document flow from the set of allocated document flows, the first document flow configured to handle the first document type;
• providing the first document to a first document transport module associated with the first document flow;
• and
• signaling the first document transport module to send the first document, wherein the first document transport module is responsive to the signal to apply rules to route the first document to a first target selected from a plurality of targets, the plurality of targets including a plurality of transports.
