Abstract

Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for processing request directed through a channel subsystem to a storage server. In one embodiment, a pattern search request is embedded in a Device Command Word (DCW) which allows the storage server to do all or substantially all of the search and comparison work in response to as few as a single DCW from the host. In addition, I/O processing can be enhanced to use the target record of interest of a successful embedded pattern search request as the starting point for read/write I/O processing, all in response to as few as a single DCW. Still further, orientation rules can also be relaxed such that once a target record is found, any and all fields of the record can be accessed and utilized in execution of subsequent commands of the initial or subsequent DCWs of the chain.

A computer program product for processing requests to a storage system, wherein the computer program product comprises a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by a processor to cause operations, the operations comprising

a host computer generating at least one device command word (DCW) for DCW transport mode processing in a channel subsystem for a storage system, the DCW generating including packaging a pattern search request in the device wherein the pattern search request packaging includes packaging in the device command word, a key pattern search argument identifying for the pattern search request, a key field search pattern to be searched for within a key field of a record, so that the generated DCW has the embedded pattern search request having the key pattern search argument;
and
the host computer requesting a pattern search for the key field search pattern including transmitting in the channel subsystem for the storage system, the generated DCW having the pattern search request and key pattern search argument for the pattern search request, packaged in the DCW to request a pattern search for the key field search pattern.

A computer system, comprising:

a storage system;
a host;
a channel subsystem coupling the host and storage system;
a processor of at least one component of the computer system;
and
a computer program product for processing requests to the storage system, wherein the computer program product comprises a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, the program instructions executable by a processor to cause operations, the operations comprising
the host generating at least one device command word (DCW) for DCW transport mode processing in a channel subsystem for the storage system, the DCW generating including packaging a pattern search request in the DCW wherein the pattern search request packaging includes packaging in the device command word, a key pattern search argument identifying for the pattern search request, a key field search pattern to be searched for within a key field of a record, so that the generated DCW has the embedded pattern search request having the key pattern search argument;
and
the host requesting a pattern search for the key field search pattern including transmitting in the channel subsystem for the storage system, the generated DCW having the pattern search request and key pattern search argument for the pattern search request, packaged in the DCW to request a pattern search for the key field search pattern.
