Abstract
Disclosed herein are systems and methods related to reducing or making more efficient handovers from one cell to another cell in a communications network. The method includes receiving mobility data for a device being serviced by a first cell, classifying the device based on the mobility data to yield a classification and making a handoff decision when handing off the device from the first cell to a second cell based at least in part on the classification. An example of the mobility data is a speed at which the device is moving or time a device is in a cell.

A method comprising:
- receiving data comprising mobility data or session data in a control plane for a device being serviced by a first node in a heterogeneous network comprising at least a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type;
- classifying the data in the control plane for the device to yield a category, wherein the category comprises an access type and an indication of an access priority to the access type, wherein the access priority comprises at least an acceptable access type or a preferred access type, and wherein the access type is identified from a list of access types which comprises at least one of a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type;
- measuring traffic quality of service from a prioritized list of traffic quality of service;
- adjusting, based in part at least on the classifying of the data in the control plane for the device, a dynamic geographic boundary of at least the first node or a second node;
- and
- making a handoff decision in the control plane when handing off the device from the first node to the second node based at least in part on the adjusting of the dynamic geographic boundary, the category or the measurement.
A system comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
- receiving data comprising mobility data or session data for a device being serviced by a first node in a heterogeneous network, the first node comprising a cellular node type,
- classifying the data in a control plane for the device to yield a category, wherein the category comprises an access type and/or an indication of an access priority to the access type, wherein the access priority comprises at least an acceptable access type or a preferred access type, and wherein the access type is identified from a list of access types which comprises at least one of a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type;
- measuring traffic quality of service in the control plane;
- identifying whether the device is in a signal range of a second node comprising a non-cellular node type;
- and
- making a handoff decision in the control plane when handing off the device from the first node to the second node based at least in part on one or more of the signal range, the traffic quality of service, and a characteristic of the second node.
A system comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
- receiving data comprising mobility data or session data for a device being serviced by a first node in a heterogeneous network comprising at least a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type;
- classifying the data in a control plane for the device to yield a category, wherein the category comprises an access type and/or an indication of an access priority to the access type, wherein the access priority comprises at least an acceptable access type or a preferred access type, and wherein the access type is identified from a list of access types which comprises at least one of a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type;
- measuring traffic quality of service in the control plane from a prioritized list of traffic quality of service;
- and
- making a handoff decision in the control plane when handing off the device from the first node to the second node based at least in part on one or more of an adjusting of a dynamic geographic boundary, the category, a characteristic of the second node or the measurement.
A mobile device comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
- transmitting data to a heterogeneous network, wherein the heterogenous network (1) receives the data comprising mobility data or session data in a control plane for the mobile device being serviced by a first node in a heterogeneous network comprising at least a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type, (2) classifies the data in the control plane for the mobile device to yield a category, wherein the category comprises an access type and an indication of an access priority to the access type, wherein the access priority comprises at least an acceptable access type or a preferred access type, and wherein the access type is identified from a list of access types which comprises at least one of a non-cellular node type and a cellular node type, (3) measures traffic quality of service from a prioritized list of traffic quality of service, (4) adjusts, based in part at least on the classifying of the data in the control plane for the mobile device, a dynamic geographic boundary of at least the first node or a second node and (5) makes a handoff decision in the control plane when handing off the mobile device from the first node to the second node based at least in part on the adjusting of the dynamic geographic boundary or the category;
- receiving, from the heterogeneous network, handoff data associated with the handoff decision;
- and
- transitioning, based on the handoff data, from the first node to the second node.
