DVB-S2 downlink ACM algorithm enhancement to improve data throughput

An apparatus of a first terminal for a communications system comprising:

• a receiver configured to receive a signal including a plurality of data blocks, each of the data blocks including an identifier which associates the data block with one of a plurality of terminals including the first terminal, at least one of the data blocks being associated with the first terminal and encoded based on a first set of transmit parameters;
• and
• at least one processor;
• and
• wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine a signal to noise ratio value for the received signal,
• wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine a block error rate value for the at least one of the data blocks associated with the first terminal and for at least one other data block of the plurality of data blocks based on the determined signal to noise ratio value, the at least one other data block being encoded based on a different set of transmit parameters,
• wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine whether use of if the first set of transmit parameters optimizes signal reception for the first terminal based, at least in part, on the block error rate value for the at least one data block associated with the first terminal, and
• wherein the at least one processor is configured to generate a request that transmission of subsequent data blocks associated with the first terminal be encoded based on a second set of transmit parameters when it is determined that the signal reception is not optimized for the first terminal with the use of the first set of transmit parameters.

A communications system comprising:

• a gateway configured to transmit a signal including a plurality of data blocks, each of the data blocks including an identifier which associates the data block with one of a plurality of terminals;
• and
• a first terminal comprising a receiver and at least one processor, wherein at least one of the data blocks is associated with the first terminal and encoded based on a first set of transmit parameters;
• and
• wherein the receiver of the first terminal is configured to receive the signal from the gateway,
• wherein the at least one processor of the first terminal is configured to identify the at least one data block associated with the first terminal,
• wherein the at least one processor of the first terminal is configured to determine a signal to noise ratio value for the received signal,
• wherein the at least one processor of the first terminal is configured to determine a block error rate value for the at least one of the data blocks associated with the first terminal and for at least one other data block of the plurality of data blocks based on the determined signal to noise ratio value, the at least one other data block being encoded based on a different set of transmit parameters,
• wherein the at least one processor of the first terminal is configured to determine whether use of the first set of transmit parameters optimizes signal reception for the first terminal based, at least in part, on the block error rate value for the at least one data block associated with the first terminal, and
• wherein the at least one processor of the first terminal is configured to generate a request that transmission of subsequent data blocks associated with the first terminal be encoded based on a second set of transmit parameters when it is determined that the signal reception is not optimized for the first terminal with the use of the first set of transmit parameters.
