Abstract
Aspects of the disclosure provide a system and method used for allowing a path selection or reselection (hereby (re)selection). In some embodiments data packets for a session between a UE and an application system (AS) can utilize a pre-established user plane path between the AS and an access node (AN) which serves the UE. This can allow for faster session set-up times as a new user plane (UP) path need not be established for every new session if existing UP paths can be utilized. Some embodiments allow an application aware (re)selection of the user plane.
Claims17
A method comprising:
- receiving, by a network element in a control plane (CP) of a communication network from an application server (AS) controller, a request related to a user equipment (UE), wherein the request comprises a list of AS locations;
- when a current UE location of the UE is at a location area, triggering, according to the request, by the network element in the CP of the communication network, a user plane (UP) path reselection for the UE based on the list of AS locations so that a new path is established for the UE:
- wherein during the UP path reselection:
- a path for the UE based on the list of AS locations is selected, wherein the path goes through an AS location selected from the list of AS locations and a network element in a UP of the communication network;
- and
- the network element in the UP is configured to direct a traffic of the UE to the selected AS location,
- wherein the request further comprises the location area indicating where to apply the user plane (UP) path reselection based on the list of AS locations to establish the new path for the UE, and
- wherein the request further comprises a time period indicating when to apply the UP path reselection.
An apparatus comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a memory having stored thereon machine readable instructions, which when executed by the processor configure the apparatus for:
- receiving, from an application server (AS) controller, a request related to a user equipment (UE), wherein the request comprises a list of AS locations;
- when a current UE location of the UE is at a location area, triggering, according to the request, a user plane (UP) path reselection for the UE based on the list of AS locations so that a new path is established for the UE;
- wherein during the UP path reselection:
- a path for the UE based on the list of AS locations is selected, wherein the path goes through an AS location selected from the list of AS locations and a network element in a UP of a communication network;
- and
- the network element in the UP is configured to direct a traffic of the UE to the selected AS location,
- wherein the request further comprises the location area indicating where to apply the user plane (UP) path reselection based on the list of AS locations to establish the new path for the UE, and
- wherein the request further comprises a time period indicating when to apply the UP path reselection.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by an electronic device, cause the electronic device to perform a method comprising:
- receiving, from an application server (AS) controller, a request related to a user equipment (UE), wherein the request comprises a list of AS locations;
- when a current UE location of the UE is at a location area, triggering, according to the request, a user plane (UP) path reselection for the UE based on the list of AS locations so that a new path is established for the UE;
- wherein during the UP path reselection:
- a path for the UE based on the list of AS locations is selected, wherein the path goes through an AS location selected from the list of AS locations and a network element in a UP of a communication network;
- and
- the network element in the UP is configured to direct a traffic of the UE to the selected AS location,
- wherein the request further comprises the location area indicating where to apply the user plane (UP) path reselection based on the list of AS locations to establish the new path for the UE, and
- wherein the request further comprises a time period indicating when to apply the UP path reselection.
