System and method for adapting alarms in a wearable medical device

A wearable defibrillator comprising:

• one or more environmental sensors comprising an accelerometer;
• one or more electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors configured to acquire ECG data;
• and
• an alarm manager and at least one processor operatively coupled to the one or more ECG sensors and the accelerometer, and configured to
• detect a cardiac abnormality in a patient based on the ECG data,
• identify a notification to be issued that is associated with the detected cardiac abnormality in the patient, the notification having one or more characteristics,
• detect an environmental condition of the wearable defibrillator based on one or more environmental parameters, wherein the accelerometer is configured to detect a presence or lack of patient motion, and/or detect a body position of the patient as the detected environmental condition,
• determine, based on the detected environmental condition, whether one or more factors exist that inhibit the patient's ability to recognize the notification associated with the detected cardiac abnormality in the patient,
• on determining the existence of the one or more factors that inhibit the patient's ability to recognize the notification associated with the detected cardiac abnormality in the patient, adapt the one or more characteristics of the notification and provide an adapted notification associated with the detected cardiac abnormality in the patient, and
• issue the adapted notification associated with the detected cardiac abnormality in the patient.
