Abstract
A system and method for assisting drivers of vehicles are described. The systems and methods provide an extended view of the area surrounding the driver's vehicle while providing real-time object trajectory for objects and other vehicles that may enter the driver's reactionary zone. The system and methods capture images of the area surrounding the driver's vehicle and create a composite image of that area in real-time and using Augmented Reality (AR) create a 3-D overlay to warn the driver as objects or other vehicles enter the driver's reactionary zone so that a driver can make more informed driving decisions.
Claims20
An after-market kit for equipping a vehicle with enhanced peripheral vision comprising:
- one or more image capture devices for mounting on the vehicle, wherein the image capture devices are sized to capture an area around the vehicle sufficient to include objects that may interact with the vehicle;
- a receiver for collecting one or more images from the one or more image capture devices;
- a processor for processing the captured images in real-time, wherein the processor combines the images to provide a composite peripheral image;
- a controller for locating an object from the captured images, the object having a speed and trajectory, and determining from the object's trajectory and speed, a possible interaction between the object and the vehicle and generating an Augmented Reality (AR) overlay for display over the composite peripheral image to convey tactical information to a driver of the vehicle at an appropriate level of urgency;
- and a display device for receiving the composite peripheral image and (AR) overlay, wherein the display device presents the composite peripheral image in a plane appropriate to the driver's desired orientation and displays the images to the driver.
An after-market kit for implementing a driver assistance method for a driver's vehicle comprising:
- a processor for
- capturing images in real time from one or more image capture devices mounted on the driver's vehicle or environmental image capture devices located in an area around the driver's vehicle to provide a composite peripheral image of a driver's reactionary zone;
- locating one or more other vehicles or objects from the captured images;
- generating, by way of a machine learning model, a navigational forecast for the one or more other vehicles or objects located in the captured images;
- and,
- a controller for
- receiving from the processor at least one other vehicle or object's trajectory, speed, and possible interaction with the driver's vehicle;
- and
- generating an Augmented Reality (AR) overlay in real-time for display over the composite peripheral image to convey tactical information to the driver of the vehicle.
An after-market kit for equipping a driver's vehicle with enhanced peripheral vision comprising:
- one or more image capture devices for mounting on a driver's vehicle, wherein the image capture devices are sized and configured to capture an area around the vehicle sufficient to include objects and/or other vehicles in a driver's reactionary zone;
- and
- a computer implemented method (App) wirelessly connecting the one or more image capture devices with a smart phone, the smart phone configured to:
- receive one or more images from the one or more image capture devices;
- process the captured images in real-time to generate a composite peripheral image;
- locate objects or other vehicles in the driver's reactionary zone from the captured images;
- determine the other vehicles' or objects' trajectory, speed, and possible interaction with the driver's vehicle;
- generate an Augmented Reality (AR) overlay for display over the composite peripheral image to convey tactical information to the driver of the vehicle at an appropriate level of urgency;
- and
- display the composite peripheral image and (AR) overlay to the driver.
