Abstract
A high flow therapy system for delivering heated and humidified respiratory gas to an airway of a patient includes a respiratory gas flow pathway for delivering the respiratory gas to the airway of the patient by way of a non-sealing respiratory interface; wherein flow rate of the respiratory gas is controlled by a microprocessor, a mixing area for mixing a first gas and a second gas in the respiratory gas flow pathway, a humidification area downstream of the mixing area and configured for humidifying respiratory gas in the respiratory gas flow pathway, and a heated delivery conduit for minimizing condensation of humidified respiratory gas.
Claims16
A high flow therapy system, comprising:
- a portable housing that contains both a high flow therapy blower and a microprocessor configured to control the blower to adjust a flow rate of a respiratory gas and that includes:
- a rear side configured to receive an external supply of oxygen, a front side opposite from the rear side and defining a space to receive a humidity chamber over a first heating element controlled by the microprocessor in the portable housing, an upper side on which a user interface display screen and buttons are mounted, an air inlet formed in the portable housing to receive ambient air, a gas inlet port downstream of the blower and positioned along the front side of the portable housing so as to mate with the humidity chamber, and a gas outlet port positioned along a different side of the portable housing than the air inlet and being configured to provide fluid communication of the respiratory gas to a non-sealing nasal interface;
- a respiratory gas flow pathway extending from within the portable housing and configured to deliver the respiratory gas to the non-sealing nasal interface, wherein the respiratory gas flow pathway includes:
- the blower contained within the housing that is configured to generate a pressurized flow of the respiratory gas, while the microprocessor is configured to control the flow rates of the respiratory gas of up to 60 liters per minute to provide high flow therapy to the non-sealing nasal interface;
- a mixing area contained within the housing for mixing the ambient air and the oxygen so that the respiratory gas comprises a mixture of the air and the gas;
- the gas inlet port positioned along the front side of the portable housing so as to mate with the humidity chamber;
- the humidity chamber that is positioned along the front side of the housing over the first heating element mounted to the housing, wherein the humidity chamber is configured to contain a volume of water and to provide the respiratory gas with added humidification in the respiratory gas flow pathways;
- the gas outlet port positioned along the different side of the portable housing than the air inlet;
- and
- a heated delivery conduit releasably matable to gas outlet port of the portable housing and configured to convey the respiratory gas with added humidification to the non-sealing nasal interface, wherein the heated delivery conduit includes a second heating element that is controlled by the microprocessor in the portable housing;
- wherein the microprocessor contained in the portable housing is configured to contemporaneously control all of a temperature of the respiratory gas, a humidity of the respiratory gas, an oxygen level of the respiratory gas, and the flow rate of the respiratory gas.
