Safety systems for smart powered surgical stapling

A surgical system, comprising:

• a surgical hub in communication with a cloud computing system;
• a surgical instrument communicatively coupled to the surgical hub, the surgical instrument comprising:
• a plurality of components interchangeably connectable to the surgical instrument, wherein each of the plurality of components of the surgical instrument comprises a device parameter that identifies each respective component of the plurality;
• and
• a sensor configured to:
• detect a tissue parameter associated with a proposed function of the surgical instrument;
• and
• transmit the detected tissue parameter to the surgical hub;
• wherein the surgical hub comprises:
• a processor;
• and
• a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions executable by the processor to:
• detect the connection of a component of the plurality of components to the surgical instrument;
• record a unique identifier associated with an identity of the connected component based on a connected device parameter associated with the connected component;
• determine a system-defined constraint for the connected component based on the unique identifier;
• and
• analyze the detected tissue parameter in cooperation with the system-defined constraint, wherein the system-defined constraint comprises at least one of a predetermined tissue parameter or a predetermined tissue parameter range associated with each transmitted device parameter;
• and
• a user interface configured to indicate whether the surgical instrument comprising the plurality of components is appropriate to perform the proposed function based on a result of the analysis.

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable instructions which, when executed, causes a machine to:

• detect a connection of a component to a surgical instrument;
• record a unique identifier associated with an identity of the connected component based on a device parameter transmitted to the machine by the connected component;
• determine a system-defined constraint for the connected component based on the unique identifier;
• and
• analyze a detected tissue parameter in cooperation with the system-defined constraint, wherein the detected tissue parameter is further associated with a proposed function of the surgical instrument, a surgical system including the surgical instrument which includes:
• a plurality of components interchangeably connectable to a surgical instrument coupled to the machine, wherein each component is configured to transmit a respective device parameter to the machine, and
• a sensor configured to detect the detected tissue parameter and transmit the detected tissue parameter to the machine, wherein the system-defined constraint comprises at least one of a predetermined tissue parameter or a predetermined tissue parameter range associated with each transmitted device parameter;
• and
• a user interface, wherein the user interface provides an indication whether the surgical instrument including the plurality of components is appropriate to perform the proposed function of the surgical instrument based on a result of the analysis.

A surgical system, comprising:

• a control circuit;
• a surgical instrument comprising:
• a plurality of components interchangeably connectable to the surgical instrument, wherein each of the plurality of components of the surgical instrument comprises a device parameter that identifies each respective component of the plurality;
• and
• a sensor configured to transmit a sensor signal to the control circuit, wherein the sensor signal is indicative of a tissue parameter associated with a proposed function of the surgical instrument;
• wherein the control circuit is configured to:
• detect the connection of a component of the plurality of components to the surgical instrument;
• record a unique identifier associated with an identity of the connected component based on a device parameter associated with the connected component;
• determine a system-defined constraint for the connected component based on the unique identifier;
• and
• analyze the tissue parameter in cooperation with the system-defined constraint, wherein the system-defined constraint comprises at least one of a predetermined tissue parameter or a predetermined tissue parameter range associated with each transmitted device parameter;
• and
• a user interface configured to indicate whether the surgical instrument comprising the plurality of components is appropriate to perform the proposed function based on a result of the analysis.
