Abstract
In a wireless communication system, a Session Management Function (SMF) transfers signaling to a User Plane Function (UPF) to deliver a wireless data service to a wireless User Equipment (UE). The UPF exchanges user data with the wireless UE over a source Radio Unit (RU) to deliver the wireless data service. A Radio Resource Control (RRC) detects the RU handover of the wireless UE from the source RU to a target RU and transfers an RU handover notice for the wireless UE the SMF. The SMF transfers new signaling to the UPF to modify the wireless data service for the wireless UE. The UPF exchanges additional user data with the wireless UE over the target RU to deliver the modified wireless data service to the wireless UE.

A method of operating a wireless communication system to deliver a wireless data service to a wireless User Equipment (UE) responsive to a Radio Unit (RU) handover of the wireless UE, the method comprising:
- a Session Management Function (SMF) transferring SMF signaling to a User Plane Function (UPF) to deliver the wireless data service to the wireless UE;
- the UPF receiving the SMF signaling and responsively exchanging user data with the wireless UE over a source RU to deliver the wireless data service to the wireless UE;
- a Radio Resource Control (RRC) detecting the RU handover of the wireless UE from the source RU to a target RU and responsively transferring an RU handover notice for the wireless UE for delivery to a Session Management Function (SMF);
- the SMF receiving the RU handover notice for the wireless UE and responsively transferring new SMF signaling to the UPF to modify the wireless data service for the wireless UE;
- and
- the UPF receiving the new signaling and responsively exchanging additional user data with the wireless UE over the target RU to deliver the modified wireless data service to the wireless UE.
A wireless communication system to deliver a wireless data service to a wireless User Equipment (UE) responsive to a Radio Unit (RU) handover of the wireless UE, the wireless communication system comprising:
- a Session Management Function (SMF) configured to transfer SMF signaling to a User Plane Function (UPF) to deliver the wireless data service to the wireless UE;
- the UPF configured to receive the SMF signaling and responsively exchange user data with the wireless UE over a source RU to deliver the wireless data service to the wireless UE;
- a Radio Resource Control (RRC) configured to detect the RU handover of the wireless UE from the source RU to a target RU and responsively transfer an RU handover notice for the wireless UE for delivery to a Session Management Function (SMF);
- the SMF configured to receive the RU handover notice for the wireless UE and responsively transfer new SMF signaling to the UPF to modify the wireless data service for the wireless UE;
- and
- the UPF configured to receive the new signaling and responsively exchange additional user data with the wireless UE over the target RU to deliver the modified wireless data service to the wireless UE.
