Abstract
Techniques are described for interference reductions using, e.g., a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) or packet error rate threshold. User Equipment that implements these techniques may reduce interference among personal area network enabled devices, for example, with the added benefit of reducing power consumption by reduced radio frequency transmissions. By reducing interference, the performance of personal area network devices may be improved.

An integrated circuit, comprising:
- a transceiver configured to:
- receive, from a transmitter of a system, an advertisement message to establish a communication channel via a wireless protocol;
- and
- determine a first value of a signal quality characteristic of the advertisement message;
- and
- wireless interface controller circuitry configured to:
- determine, according to the first value of the signal quality characteristic, whether the integrated circuit is within a predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter by comparing the first value to a threshold adjustable based at least on an ambient activity level of a network including the integrated circuit, the ambient activity level indicating a rate of packet collisions in the network;
- determine, according to a determination on whether the integrated circuit is within the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter, whether the integrated circuit is an intended recipient or an unintended recipient;
- in response to a determination that the integrated circuit is the intended recipient determined when the integrated circuit is within the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter, cause the transceiver to transmit, during a time period, a response to the advertisement message to establish the communication channel, while an additional system that received the advertisement message determines to forgo transmission, during the time period, of another response to the advertisement message, in response to a determination that the additional system is the unintended recipient according to a second value of the signal quality characteristic of the advertisement message received by the additional system;
- and
- in response to a determination that the integrated circuit is the unintended recipient determined when the integrated circuit is not within the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter, forgo transmission by the transceiver of the response to the advertisement message during the time period.
A system, comprising:
- one or more antennas;
- wireless interface controller circuitry coupled to the one or more antennas;
- and
- system circuitry coupled to the wireless interface controller circuitry, the system circuitry configured to:
- determine a first value of a signal quality characteristic, the first value of the signal quality characteristic being at least one of a first signal strength value or a first error rate of a first wireless signal received by the wireless interface controller circuitry from another system through the one or more antennas, the first wireless signal comprising an advertisement message by the another system to establish a communication channel;
- determine, according to the first value of the signal quality characteristic, whether the system is within a predetermined level of proximity to the another system;
- determine whether the system is an intended system or an unintended system for the communication channel, according to a determination on whether the system is within the predetermined level of proximity to the another system by comparing the first value to a threshold adjustable based at least on an ambient activity level of a network including the system and the another system, the ambient activity level indicating a rate of packet collisions in the network;
- responsive to determining that the system is the intended system determined when the system is within the predetermined level of proximity to the another system, cause the wireless interface controller circuitry to transmit, during a time period, a first response to the advertisement message, to the another system to establish the communication channel, while an additional system that received the first wireless signal determines to forgo transmission, during the time period, of another wireless signal to the another system, in response to a determination that the additional system is the unintended system according to a second value of the signal quality characteristic of the first wireless signal received by the additional system, the second value of the signal quality characteristic being at least one of a second signal strength value or a second error rate;
- and
- responsive to determining that the system is the unintended system for the communication channel determined when the system is not within the predetermined level of proximity to the another system, forgo transmitting, during the time period, a second response to the advertisement message to the another system.
A method comprising:
- receiving, by a communication system from a transmitter, an advertisement message to establish a communication channel via a wireless protocol;
- determining, by the communication system, a first value of a signal quality characteristic of the advertisement message;
- determining, by the communication system, according to the first value of the signal quality characteristic, whether the communication system is within a predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter by comparing the first value to a threshold adjustable based at least on an ambient activity level of a network including the communication system, the ambient activity level indicating a rate of packet collisions in the network;
- determining, by the communication system, according to the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter, whether the communication system is an intended recipient or an unintended recipient;
- transmitting, by the communication system during a time period in response to the communication system being the intended recipient determined according to a determination that the communication system is within the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter, a response to the advertisement message to establish the communication channel, while an additional communication system that received the advertisement message determines to forgo transmission, during the time period, of another response to the advertisement message, in response to the additional communication system being the unintended recipient according to a second value of the signal quality characteristic of the advertisement message received by the additional communication system;
- and
- forgoing, by the communication system, during the time period, transmission of the response to the advertisement message, in response to the communication system being the unintended recipient determined according to a determination that the communication system is not within the predetermined level of proximity to the transmitter.
