Abstract
A design for reference signals dedicated for positioning measurements in UL and DL directions and a mechanism for Tx/Rx beam pair selection for positioning is disclosed. The design can improve performance of positioning operation in NR communication systems, can improve resource efficiency of positioning operation in NR communication systems, and can reduce the amount of resources needed for PRS transmission, reduce latency and increase the positioning measurement quality.

A method for downlink (DL) transmitter (TX) beam sweeping and user equipment (UE) TX/Receiver (RX) beam selection, the method comprising:
- configuring a UE with a plurality of Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) resources based on a plurality of PRS resource IDs to enable the UE to perform measurements of a plurality of signal location parameters (SLPs), the plurality of PRS resource IDs being associated with a plurality of geographically distributed antenna ports;
- sweeping, by the configured UE, a plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs;
- estimating, by the configured UE in response to the sweeping, the plurality of SLPs for each antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs;
- selecting, by the configured UE, a preferred antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS Resource IDs based upon the plurality of SLPs;
- and
- reporting, by the UE, the preferred antenna port for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resources IDs.
A method for uplink (UL) transmitter (TX) beam sweeping and access node (AN) TX/Receiver (RX) beam selection, the method comprising:
- configuring an AN with a plurality of Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) resources based on a plurality of PRS resource IDs to enable the AN to perform measurements of a plurality of signal location parameters (SLPs), the plurality of PRS resource IDs being associated with a plurality of geographically distributed antenna ports;
- sweeping, by the configured AN, a plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs;
- estimating, by the configured AN in response to the sweeping, the plurality of SLPs for each antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs;
- selecting, by the configured AN, a preferred antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS Resource IDs based upon the plurality of SLPs;
- and
- reporting, by the configured AN, the preferred antenna port for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resources IDs.
An apparatus, comprising:
- processor circuitry configured to:
- configure the apparatus with a plurality of Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) resources based on a plurality of PRS resource IDs to enable the apparatus to perform measurements of a plurality of signal location parameters (SLPs), the plurality of PRS resource IDs being associated with a plurality of geographically distributed antenna ports, and
- once configured:
- sweep a plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs,
- estimate, in response to the sweeping, the plurality of SLPs for each antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS Resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resource IDs, and
- select a preferred antenna port from among the plurality of antenna ports for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS Resource IDs based upon the plurality of SLPs;
- and
- radio front end circuitry configured to report the preferred antenna port for each PRS resource ID from among the plurality of PRS resources IDs.
