Reducing parasitic interactions in a qubit grid

An apparatus comprising:

• a plurality of first qubits,
• a plurality of second qubits,
• a plurality of qubit couplers defining nearest neighbor interactions between the first qubits and second qubits, wherein the first qubits, second qubits, and qubit couplers are arranged as a two dimensional grid and each-qubit of the plurality of first qubits is coupled to multiple second qubits through respective qubit couplers;
• a qubit controller configured to operate the plurality of first qubits and second qubits, wherein operating the plurality of first qubits and second qubits comprises:
• pairing multiple first qubits with respective neighboring second qubits such that each paired first and second qubit is neither coupled nor diagonal to other paired first and second qubits;
• and
• performing an entangling operation on each paired first and second qubit in parallel, comprising detuning each second qubit in the paired first and second qubits in parallel,
• wherein the first qubits comprise data qubits and the second qubits comprise measurement qubits.
