Abstract
Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for ranking query completions based on activity session data. One of the methods includes receiving a query prefix from a user. A reference parameter for the user is obtained. One or more likely queries that are likely to co-occur with the reference parameter in user activity sessions are identified, wherein each likely query has an associated prediction score. A ranking of the one or more likely queries is provided in response to receiving the query prefix.
Claims17
A computer-implemented method comprising:
- receiving, at a first time, a first query submitted to a search system by a user of a computing device, wherein the search system identifies a plurality of corresponding search results based on queries submitted to the search system by a plurality of users, and wherein the user is included in the plurality of users;
- receiving, at a second time after the first time, a partial query input by the user at the computing device,
- wherein the partial query includes beginning characters of a second query, and
- wherein, at the second time, the previously submitted first query is a most recently submitted query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
- and
- in response to receiving the partial query input:
- performing a search of a database of user activity sessions based on the previously submitted first query;
- identifying, based on performing the search, a plurality of the user activity sessions that each include an occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query,
- wherein the identified plurality of user activity sessions include one or more user activity sessions associated with a different user, of the plurality of users, that is different from the user;
- identifying, based on the identified plurality of user activity sessions that each include the occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) the at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query, one or more likely query completions,
- wherein each of the one or more likely query completions comprise corresponding additional characters of the at least one other previously submitted query that co-occurs with the previously submitted first query in the identified plurality of user activity sessions that include the occurrence of the previously submitted first query;
- and
- determining, for each of the likely query completions, a corresponding ranking score based on a corresponding correlation between occurrences of a corresponding one of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query in the one or more identified user activity sessions,
- wherein determining the corresponding ranking scores based on the corresponding correlation between occurrences of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query is performed based on determining that the previously submitted first query is the query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
- and
- causing one or more of the ranked likely query completions to be provided to the computing device of the user, wherein causing one or more of the ranked likely query completions to be provided to the computing device of the user causes the computing device to present one or more of the ranked likely query completions for presentation to the user via a display of the computing device.
A system comprising:
- one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
- receiving, at a first time, a first query submitted to a search system by a user of a computing device, wherein the search system is configured to identify a plurality of corresponding search results based on queries submitted to the search system by a plurality of users, and wherein the user is included in the plurality of users;
- receiving, at a second time after the first time, a partial query input by the user at the computing device,
- wherein the partial query includes beginning characters of a second query, and
- wherein, at the second time, the previously submitted first query is a most recently submitted query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
- and
- in response to receiving the partial query input:
- performing a search of a database of user activity sessions based on the previously submitted first query;
- identifying, based on performing the search, a plurality of the user activity sessions of the database that each include an occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query,
- wherein the identified plurality of user activity sessions include one or more user activity sessions associated with a different user, of the plurality of users, that is different from the user;
- identifying, based on the identified plurality of user activity sessions that each include the occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) the at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query, one or more likely query completions,
- wherein each of the one or more likely query completions comprise corresponding additional characters of the at least one other previously submitted query that co-occurs with the previously submitted first query in the identified plurality of user activity sessions that include the occurrence of the previously submitted first query;
- and
- determining, for each of the likely query completions, a corresponding ranking score based on a corresponding correlation between occurrences of a corresponding one of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query in the one or more identified user activity sessions,
- wherein determining the corresponding ranking scores based on the corresponding correlation between occurrences of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query is performed based on determining that the previously submitted first query is the query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
- and
- causing one or more of the ranked likely query completions to be provided to the computing device of the user, wherein causing one or more of the ranked likely query completions to be provided to the computing device of the user causes the computing device to present one or more of the ranked likely query completions for presentation to the user via a display of the computing device.
A computer program product, encoded on one or more non-transitory computer storage media, comprising instructions that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
- receiving, at a first time, a first query submitted to a search system by a user of a computing device, wherein the search system is configured to identify a plurality of corresponding search results based on queries submitted to the search system by a plurality of users, and wherein the user is included in the plurality of users;
- receiving, at a second time after the first time, a partial query input by the user at the computing device,
- wherein the partial query includes beginning characters of a second query, and
- wherein, at the second time, the previously submitted first query is a most recently submitted query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
- and
- in response to receiving the partial query input:
- performing a search of a database of user activity sessions based on the previously submitted first query;
- identifying, based on performing the search, a plurality of the user activity sessions of the database that each include an occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query,
- wherein the identified plurality of user activity sessions include one or more user activity sessions associated with a different user, of the plurality of users, that is different from the user;
- identifying, based on the identified plurality of user activity sessions that each include the occurrence of:
- (1) the previously submitted first query and (2) the at least one other previously submitted query that includes the beginning characters of the second query, one or more likely query completions,
- wherein each of the one or more likely query completions comprise corresponding additional characters of the at least one other previously submitted query that co-occurs with the previously submitted first query in in the identified plurality of user activity sessions that include the occurrence of the previously submitted first query;
- and
- determining, for each of the likely query completions, a corresponding ranking score based on a corresponding correlation between occurrences of a corresponding one of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query in the one or more identified user activity sessions,
- wherein determining the corresponding ranking scores based on the corresponding correlation between occurrences of the likely query completions and the previously submitted first query is performed based on determining that the previously submitted first query is the query that was most recently submitted to the search system by the user;
