Vehicle control system

A method comprising:

• monitoring a location of a vehicle system as the vehicle system travels along a first route based on signals generated by a locator device disposed onboard the vehicle system;
• identifying a crossing, at which a second route intersects the first route, that is upcoming based on the location of the vehicle system and a known location of the crossing stored within a database accessible to the one or more processors;
• determining, via the one or more processors accessing the database, whether emitting an audible warning sequence is appropriate when the vehicle system approaches the crossing;
• and
• in response to determining that the audible warning sequence is appropriate, controlling an audible warning emitter disposed onboard the vehicle system, via the one or more processors, to generate the audible warning sequence as the vehicle system approaches the crossing.

A vehicle system comprising:

• a locator device;
• an audible warning emitter;
• a speed sensor;
• and
• a controller disposed communicatively connected to the located device, the audible warning emitter, and the speed sensor, the controller comprising one or more processors and a memory device, wherein the one or more processors are configured to:
• monitor a location of the vehicle system as the vehicle system travels along a first route based on signals generated by the locator device;
• monitor a speed of the vehicle system based on signals generated by the speed sensor;
• identify a crossing, at which a second route intersects the first route, that is upcoming based on the location of the vehicle system and a known location of the crossing stored within the memory device;
• determine, via crossing information stored within the memory device, that emitting an audible warning sequence is appropriate when the vehicle system approaches the crossing;
• determine a location along the first route at which to initiate the audible warning sequence based on the speed of the vehicle system, the known location of the crossing, and a predetermined duration of the audible warning sequence;
• and
• control the audible warning emitter to generate the audible warning sequence upon the vehicle system reaching the location along the first route at which to initiate the audible warning sequence.
