Abstract
A wood chipper which includes a chamber having a flywheel and which includes a wood in-feed system. The in-feed system includes a bin inclined for gravity-feeding wood product to the chamber and a cylindrical anvil disposed between an outlet of the bin and the flywheel. The flywheel includes a plurality of plates laminated together with fasteners. First and second ones of the plates have aligned first and second openings respectively for passage of chips. The second opening has a tab which extends from an edge thereof partially into the first opening. A knife is attached to the tab and supports a blade outwardly of the first plate and thus outwardly of the flywheel. A system is provided for providing water mist onto wood product only as it is being fed down the in-feed bin.
Claims19
A flywheel for a wood chipper, the flywheel comprising a plurality of plates laminated together with fasteners, a central opening in the flywheel for receiving a shaft for effecting rotation of the flywheel, and at least one knife attached to the flywheel and having a blade for cutting wood material to form chips of the wood material as the flywheel is rotated, wherein said plurality of plates includes a first plate and a second plate, wherein said first plate has at least one first slot extending through said first plate, wherein said second plate has at least one second slot which extends through said second plate and which aligns with said at least one first slot to define at least one passage through the flywheel for chips cut by said at least one knife, wherein said second plate has at least one tab which is integral with said second plate and which extends from an edge of said at least one second slot, wherein said at least one tab is skewed relative to said second plate thereby extending at an angle relative to said second plate so that said at least one tab extends partially into said at least one first slot, wherein said at least one knife is attached to said at least one tab whereby said at least one knife is skewed relative to said first plate thereby extending at an angle relative to said first plate, and wherein said blade is disposed outwardly of said first plate.
A wood chipper comprising a chamber, an inlet to said chamber for receiving wood material into said chamber, a flywheel rotatably received in said chamber, said flywheel including a plurality of plates laminated together with fasteners and at least one knife attached to said flywheel, and wherein said at least one knife has a blade which faces said chamber inlet for cutting the wood material as it enters said chamber to form chips of the wood material as said flywheel is rotated, the wood chipper further comprising an inclined chute for gravity feeding wood material toward said chamber inlet, wherein said chute has an outlet is located a proximate distance of said flywheel, the wood chipper further comprising means for providing an anvil-like surface against which said at least one knife acts to partially cut the wood material so that wood material is continuously pulled into the path of the at least one knife, wherein said means for providing an anvil-like surface comprises a roller composed of hardened material against which cutting by said at least one knife acts, wherein said roller is disposed between said outlet of said chute and said flywheel in a manner so that the wood material is movable from said chute over said roller against which said at least one knife acts to cut the wood material.
A wood chipper comprising a chamber, an inlet to said chamber for receiving wood material into said chamber, a flywheel rotatably received in said chamber, said flywheel including a plurality of plates laminated together with fasteners and at least one knife attached to said flywheel, and wherein said at least one knife has a blade which faces said chamber inlet for cutting the wood material as it enters said chamber to form chips of the wood material as said flywheel is rotated, the wood chipper further comprising an inlet chute for feeding wood material to said chamber, a nozzle for providing a mist of water onto the wood material to wet it as it is being fed along said inlet chute, a baffle hingedly attached at a hinge point to said inlet chute for hinged movement about said hinge point in response to the feeding of wood material along said inlet chute, a pump for pumping water to said nozzle, a switch for turning said pump on and off, and a member attached to said baffle and connected to said switch in a manner (1) for actuating said switch for turning said pump on to effect the water spray when said baffle is hingedly moved from a first position to a second position during the feeding of wood material along said inlet chute and (2) for de-actuating said switch for turning said pump off when said baffle is hingedly returned to said first position upon the ceasing of the feeding of wood material along said inlet chute.
A process for making a flywheel for a wood chipper comprising the steps of:
- forming a plurality of plates including forming a plurality of apertures in each of the plates and forming a central opening in each of the plates for receiving a shaft;
- laminating the plurality of plates together by inserting fasteners in corresponding ones of the apertures in the plates;
- attaching at least one knife to the laminated plates to position a blade of the at least one knife on one side of the flywheel;
- and
- laser cutting each of the plates to have a thickness which is up to about ⅜ inch and laser cutting the apertures and the central opening in each of the plates;
- and
- forming at least one first slot which extends through a first of the plates, forming at least one second slot which extends through a second of the plates and which aligns with the at least one first slot to define at least one passage through the flywheel for chips cut by the at least one knife,
- wherein the step of forming the at least one second slot includes bending the second of the plates thereby forming at least one tab which extends from an edge of the at least one second slot and which extends at an angle relative to the second plate and further extends partially into the at least one first slot,
- wherein the step of attaching the at least one knife includes attaching the at least one knife to the at least one tab so that the blade is disposed outwardly of the first plate.
