Abstract
An ultrasonic surgical blade includes a body having a proximal end, a distal end, and an outer surface. The distal end is movable relative to a longitudinal axis in accordance with ultrasonic vibrations applied to the proximal end. At least a portion of the outer surface of the body comprises a lubricious coating adhered thereto. The lubricious coating has a coefficient of friction that is less than the coefficient of friction of the outer surface of the body.
Claims20
A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a clamp arm comprising a tissue pad, wherein the clamp arm is movable between an unclamped position and a clamped position;
- and
- an ultrasonic blade defining a blade axis, the ultrasonic blade comprising:
- a proximal end configured to receive ultrasonic vibrations;
- a distal end movable along the blade axis in accordance with ultrasonic vibrations applied to the proximal end;
- and
- a body comprising a coating positioned opposite the tissue pad upon positioning of the clamp arm in the clamped position, wherein the coating comprises a material configured to reduce the coefficient of friction between the tissue pad and the body.

A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a clamp arm comprising a tissue pad;
- and
- an ultrasonic blade defining a blade axis, wherein the ultrasonic blade comprises:
- a proximal end configured to receive ultrasonic vibrations;
- a distal end movable along the blade axis in accordance with ultrasonic vibrations applied to the proximal end;
- and
- a body comprised of a first material;
- and
- a coating comprised of a second material, wherein the second material is different than the first material, and wherein the second material is configured to reduce the coefficient of friction between the tissue pad and the body.
