User authentication in communication systems

A system for authenticating users in a communication network, the system comprising:

• a token generator comprising one or more circuits, wherein the token generator is configured to generate an identification token in response to a user terminal loading a web page, and wherein:
• the identification token is associated with a time stamp indicating when a network address is used by the user terminal;
• and
• generating the identification token is triggered in response to a request from the user terminal to load the web page;
• a network processing unit comprising one or more circuits, wherein the network processing unit is configured to:
• secure token related exchanges, wherein the securing comprises applying separate security measures to the identification token itself and any communication of the identification token;
• obtain user authentication information associated with the network address and the time stamp;
• and
• send the user authentication information to one or both of the user terminal and a network element configured to provide the web page for authenticating the user of the communication network.
