Abstract
A grating emitter method and system for modulating the polarization of an optical beam, such as one for transmission through free-space or use in an atomic clock.
Claims20
A system for modulating polarization of an optical beam, the system comprising:
- a light source for generating light into a first waveguide and a second waveguide;
- a first grating coupler for coupling the light from the first waveguide into an output emission;
- a second grating coupler for coupling the light from the second waveguide into the output emission;
- and
- at least one phase shifter for shifting the phase of the light between the first waveguide and the second waveguide in order to control a polarization of the output emission.

A system for generating an array of optical beams for use in an atomic clock, the system comprising:
- a substrate;
- at least one optical splitter in the substrate for splitting a received optical signal into separate optical signals;
- an array of grating emitters, the grating emitters for coupling the separate optical signals out of the substrate into beam array to an atomic clock for push-pull optical pumping;
- and
- at least one phase shifter for shifting the phase of the light between the first waveguide and the second waveguide in order to control a polarization of the output emission.

A system for modulating polarization of an optical beam, the system comprising:
- a light source for generating coherent light, with a coherence length of at least 1 millimeter, into a first waveguide and a second waveguide;
- a first grating coupler for coupling the light from the first waveguide into an output emission;
- a second grating coupler for coupling the light from the second waveguide into the output emission;
- and
- at least one phase shifter for shifting the phase of the light between the first waveguide and the second waveguide in order to control a polarization of the output emission.
