Abstract
A laser weapon system is described. Particularly, embodiments describe subsystems of a laser weapon system including those necessary for laser generation, operational control, optical emission, and heat dissipation configured to provide a lightweight unit of reduced dimensions.
Claims20
A portable laser weapon system comprising:
- a laser generation module;
- a fiber optic cable coupled to the laser generation module;
- a laser emitting unit coupled to the fiber optic cable;
- a heat mitigation module comprising at least one removable cooling pod containing a phase change material,
- wherein heat generated by the laser generation module converts the phase change material from a first phase to a second phase;
- and
- a chiller that converts the phase change material from the second phase to the first phase,
- wherein the chiller is separable from the laser generation module and the heat mitigation module and is configured to receive the at least one removable cooling pod.
A portable laser weapon system comprising:
- a laser generation module;
- a laser emitting unit connected to the laser generation module;
- a heat mitigation module comprising a phase change material, wherein heat generated by the laser generation module converts the phase change material from a first phase to a second phase;
- a chiller separable from the laser generation module and the heat mitigation module, wherein the phase change material is placed in the chiller for converting the phase change material from the second phase to the first phase;
- and
- a control module comprising a processor, the processor configured to transition the system among the following modes:
- an off mode;
- a system ready mode where the laser generation module is partially operational and the chiller is inactive;
- a laser ready mode where the laser generation module is active and the chiller is inactive;
- a high usage mode where the laser generation module is active and the chiller is active;
- and
- a thermal correction mode where the laser generation module is inactive and the chiller is active.
A method of using a portable laser weapon system comprising a laser generation module, a fiber optic cable coupled to the laser generation module, a laser emitting unit coupled to the fiber optic cable, a heat mitigation module comprising at least one removable cooling pod containing a phase change material, a chiller separable from the laser generation module and the heat mitigation module and configured to receive the at least one removable cooling pod, a temperature sensor, and a control module having a processor, the method comprising the steps of:
- generating heat by the laser generation module;
- receiving the heat in the heat mitigation module
- converting, using the received heat in the heat mitigation module, the phase change material from a first phase to a second phase;
- converting, using the chiller, the phase change material from the second phase to the first phase;
- reading a temperature of the laser generation module using the temperature sensor,
- transitioning, responsive to instructions from the processor and at least partially responsive to the reading of the temperature, to a system ready mode where the laser generation module is at least partially operational;
- transitioning, responsive to instructions from the processor and at least partially responsive to the reading of the temperature, to a high usage mode where the laser generation module is active;
- and
- transitioning, responsive to instructions from the processor, to a thermal correction mode where the laser generation module is inactive and the chiller is active.
