Abstract
A rotatable plate is configured to be coupled to a rotary table of a rig floor. The rotatable plate defines a central passage through which a tubular can be passed. Multiple arms each have a first end rotably coupled to the rotatable plate. The arms are hinged such that a distal end of the arms, away from the rotatable plate, are configured to move towards or away from the passage. Each of arms extends away from the rotatable plate towards the passage. The arms are biased away from the passage. Rollers are rotably coupled to one of the distal ends of the arms.
Claims14
A rig safety device comprising:
- a rotatable plate configured to be coupled to a rotary table of a rig floor, the rotatable plate defining a central passage through which a tubular can be passed;
- a plurality of arms each having a first end rotably coupled to the rotatable plate, the plurality of arms hinged such that a distal end of the arms, away from the rotatable plate, are configured to move towards or away from the passage, each of the plurality of arms extending away from the rotatable plate towards the passage, the plurality of arms biased away from the passage;
- a plurality of rollers rotably coupled to one of the distal ends of the plurality of arms
- wherein each of the plurality of arms comprises:
- a cylinder nearer the rotatable plate than the distal end;
- a pin at the distal end of the arm, the pin being radially retained by the cylinder;
- and
- an axial bias biasing the pin away from the cylinder.
A rig system comprising:
- a vertical tubular;
- a clamp attached to and encircling the tubular;
- a rotary table defining a portion of a passage through which the tubular is passed;
- and
- a catching device above and supported by the rotary table, the catching device configured to rotate in unison with the rotary table, the catching device comprising:
- a rotatable plate defining a second portion of the passage through which the tubular is passed;
- a plurality of arms extending away from the rotatable plate towards the passage, the plurality of arms biased away from the passage, the plurality of arms hinged such that a distal end of each of the arms, away from the rotatable plate, is configured to move towards or away from the passage;
- a plurality of rollers, each of the plurality of rollers at distal ends of the plurality of arms, each of the plurality of rollers being supported by two of the plurality of arms;
- and
- wherein each of the plurality of arms comprises:
- a cylinder nearer the rotatable plate than the distal end;
- a pin at the distal end of the arm, the pin being radially retained by the cylinder;
- and
- an axial bias biasing the pin away from the cylinder.
