A method for treating anxiety in a patient with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), comprising orally administering to the patient an effective amount of a synthetic composition comprising one or more neutral human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs),
- wherein the patient is administered a higher amount of the one or more neutral HMOs for an initial treatment period, followed by a lower amount of the one or more neutral HMOs, for a maintenance period, and
- wherein the initial treatment period comprises administering 5 g to 10 g per day of the one or more neutral HMOs.
