Abstract
Methods of forming arenes, including asymmetrical arenes, such as asymmetrical pyrene derivatives. Substituents of starting materials may be selected to direct a photochemical cascade and possibly a 1,2-aryl shift. The methods may include a Mallory cyclization, which is controlled, at least in part, by substituents of the starting materials. Compounds and compositions including asymmetrical arenes.
Claims20
A method of forming an arene, the method comprising:
- providing a compound of formula (Ia), a compound of formula (Ib), or a combination thereof—
- wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of a C1-C20 alkyl and a C1-C20 aryl, and each R′ is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1-C20 alkyl, a C1-C20 aryl, a C1-C20 alkoxy, and a C1-C20 aryloxy;
- irradiating the compound of formula (Ia), the compound of formula (Ib), or the combination thereof to form a compound of formula (II)—
- irradiating the compound of formula (II) to form a compound of formula (IIIa), a compound of formula (IIIb), or a combination thereof—
1 more element
A compound of formula (IIIa), a compound of formula (IIIb), or a combination thereof:
- wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of a C1-C20 alkyl and a C1-C20 aryl, and each R′ is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1-C20 alkyl, a C1-C20 aryl, a C1-C20 alkoxy, and a C1-C20 aryloxy.
