Abstract
In one aspect, provided herein is a device for notating a musical composition. The device, in various implementations, is structured so as to be less laborious to notate, easier to read, and more simple to employ in notating, reading, and/or playing the music of a given composition to be composed and/or played. Accordingly, in its most basic form, the device herein disclosed includes a template, upon which template one or more symbols may be notated, where such notation is configured in a manner that more closely relates the note to be played with the mechanical action needed to be performed so as to play that note, such as on an instrument to be or being played.

A method of playing a musical composition on an instrument, wherein the method includes the steps of:
- providing an instrument, the instrument having a keyboard comprised of both natural key notes keys as well as sharp and flat key note keys for the playing of musical notes in a musical composition, and an associated display for displaying an electronic tablature template comprising a plurality of representations, the plurality of representations including a first representation having a plurality of offset bar ends demarcating a measure of a musical composition to be played, and a second representation comprising one or more musical notes to be played, which notes are positionable between one or more measures, the one or more selectable musical notes being represented by a plurality of alpha-numeric symbols indicating an identity of the musical note to be played, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat note keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol having a relative size and a color, the relative size demarcating a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, the color indicating from which octave the musical note to be played is derived;
- displaying, on the display of the instrument, the electronic tablature template and a plurality of representations, a first representation comprising a plurality of offset bar ends, the bar ends demarcating a measure for the composition to be played, and a second representation comprising:
- one or more musical notes to be played positioned within the bar ends, the one or more musical notes being represented by a plurality of alpha-numeric symbols indicating an identity of the musical note to be played, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat note keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol having a relative size and a color, the relative size demarcating a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, the color indicating from which octave the musical note to be played is derived, and where the symbol is repeated a number of times within the measure, the number of times the symbol is repeated indicates the number of times the musical note is to be played within that measure.
A musical tablature template generation system for generating a musical composition, the musical composition displaying a tablature template setting forth how to play the musical composition on a keyboard comprising natural note keys and sharp and flat note keys, the musical tablature template generation system comprising:
- a client computing device having a display coupled therewith, the client computing device for use in the generation of the musical composition;
- and
- a musical composition generation server being coupled to the client computing device via a network connection, the musical composition generation server having at least one processor executing a plurality of instructions that when executed performs a set of operations comprising:
- generating, at a display of the client computing device, by a musical tablature template generation portion of the plurality of instructions, a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface including:
- a musical composition tablature template, the musical composition tablature template having a plurality of representations, the plurality of representations including a first representation having a plurality of offset bar ends demarcating a measure of a musical composition to be played, and a second representation comprising one or more selectable musical notes to be played, which notes are positionable in between one or more measures, the one or more selectable musical notes being represented by a plurality of alpha-numeric symbols indicating an identity of the musical note to be played, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat note keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol having a relative size and a color, the relative size demarcating a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, the color indicating from which octave the musical note to be played is derived, and
- an input device for receiving alpha-numeric symbol selections from the musical composition composer as to how to play the musical composition, the alpha-numeric symbol selections corresponding to a selection of natural note keys and flat and sharp keys to play, when, and for how long when performing the musical composition, whereby the input comprises a plurality of ordered alpha-numeric symbols indicating the identity of selected musical notes that are to be played in accordance with the order, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol of the input having a selected relative size and a selected color, where the relative size demarcates a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, and the color indicates from which octave the musical note to be played is derived;
- and
- populating, by a template population portion of the plurality of instructions, the musical tablature template with the alpha-numeric symbols that correspond to the identity of the alpha-numeric symbols, size, and color selected by the user, in accordance with the user received inputs.
A musical tablature template generation device for displaying and teaching how to play a musical composition on a keyboard having natural note keys and sharp and flat note keys, the musical tablature template generation device comprising:
- a display, coupled to the musical template generator via a network connection, the display configured to display the musical tablature template;
- a musical tablature template including:
- a plurality of representations, the plurality of representations including a first representation having a plurality of offset bar ends demarcating a measure of a musical composition to be played, and a second representation comprising one or more musical notes to be played positioned in between one or more measures, the one or more musical notes to be played being represented by a plurality of alpha-numeric symbols indicating an identity of the musical note to be played, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat note keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol having a relative size and a color, the relative size demarcating a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, the color indicating from which octave the musical note to be played is derived, and where the symbol is repeated a number of times within the measure, the number of times the symbol is repeated indicates the number of times the musical note is to be played within that measure;
- an input device for receiving user instructions as to how to play the musical composition, the instructions corresponding to a selection of natural note keys and flat and sharp note keys to play, when, and for how long, whereby the input comprises a plurality of alpha-numeric symbols indicating the identity of selectable musical notes that may be played, the alpha-numeric symbols including a letter for representing the natural note keys to be played, and a number for representing the sharp and flat keys to be played, each alpha-numeric symbol of the input being capable of having a relative size and a color to be selected along with each alpha numeric symbol selected, where the relative size demarcates a number of counts during which the musical note is to be played within the measure, and the color indicates from which octave the musical note to be played is derived.
