A method for treating dental caries in an individual, the method comprising applying an effective amount of a composition to a tooth surface of the individual, said composition comprising microparticles comprising an antimicrobial material, a surfactant layer, and a hydration layer that are surrounded by an SiO2 layer that is configured to release the antimicrobial material in the presence of a tooth having an active dental caries lesion but to not release the effective amount of antimicrobial material in the presence of a tooth lacking an active dental caries lesion.
