Abstract
Systems, methods, and apparatuses are disclosed for predicting or estimating the value of a variable speed sign (VSS). Probe data is received from multiple vehicles associated with a road segment. Location values are derived from the probe data. Center distance values are calculated based on the location values and the road segment. Clusters are derived from the probe data. Center distance values are grouped according to the respective clusters and a lane is assigned to at least one cluster based on the center distance values. The speed of the cluster predicts or estimates the corresponding lane of the VSS.
Claims18
A method for variable speed sign speed-limit estimation without a camera, the method comprising:
- identifying probe data including location coordinates for a plurality of vehicles, the probe data describing speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across a plurality of lanes for a roadway;
- performing a multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm on the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes, wherein the multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm identifies multiple modes in the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes;
- identifying, in response to multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm, a plurality of clusters based on the multiple modes;
- calculating a first representative speed for a first cluster in the plurality of clusters;
- calculating a second representative speed for a second cluster in the plurality of clusters;
- assigning the first representative speed to a plural subset of the plurality of lanes of the roadway including a first lane;
- assigning the second representative speed to a second lane of the roadway;
- and
- determining an estimate for a variable speed sign based on the first representative speed or the second representative speed calculated from the clustered probe data and without use of a camera.
An apparatus for variable speed sign speed-limit estimation without a camera, the apparatus comprising:
- a memory configured to store probe data collected at a plurality of vehicles associated with a road segment, the probe data describing speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across a plurality of lanes for the road segment;
- and
- a controller configured to perform a multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm on the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes, wherein the multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm identifies multiple modes in the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes;
- wherein the controller defines a first representative speed for a first mode of the probe data and a second representative speed for a second mode of the probe data and assigns the first representative speed to a first lane of road segment and the second representative speed to a plurality of lanes of the road segment including a second lane of the road segment,
- wherein the controller is configured to estimate a variable speed sign based on the first representative speed or the second representative speed calculated from the cluster probe data and without use of a camera.
A non-transitory computer readable medium including instructions that when executed on a computer are operable to:
- identify probe data including location coordinates for a plurality of vehicles, the probe data describing speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across a plurality of lanes for a roadway;
- perform a multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm on the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes, wherein the multi-modality detection and clustering algorithm identifies multiple modes in the speeds of vehicles downstream of the variable speed sign across the plurality of lanes;
- calculate a first representative speed for a first cluster in the plurality of clusters;
- calculate a second representative speed for a second cluster in the plurality of clusters;
- assign the first representative speed to a plurality of lanes of a roadway including a first lane of a roadway;
- assign the second representative speed to a second lane of the roadway;
- and
- determine a speed limit displayed on a variable speed sign from the first representative speed or the second representative speed based on the clustered probe data and without use of a camera.
