Color driven localization of 1D and 2D barcodes in digital capture systems

A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions stored therein that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the following acts:

• obtaining data representing optically captured imagery, the optically captured imagery depicting a plurality of barcodes, with each of the plurality of barcodes being associated with a first color and a second color;
• locating first regions within the obtained data that include the first color;
• locating second regions within the obtained data that include the second color;
• creating a centroid for each of the located regions;
• determining an area for each of the located regions;
• for a color region couple comprising a located first color region and a located second color region, generating a metric comprising:
• i) a distance between the located first color region centroid and the located second color region centroid, and ii) a ratio of areas of the located first color region and the located second color region;
• comparing the metric to a predetermined value to determine whether to process the color region couple to decode a 1D or 2D barcode.

An image processing apparatus comprising:

• memory storing data representing optically captured imagery, the optically captured imagery depicting a plurality of barcodes, with each of the plurality of barcodes being associated with a first color and a second color;
• one or more multi-core processors configured for:
• locating first regions within the stored data that include the first color;
• locating second regions within the stored data that include the second color;
• creating a centroid for each of the located regions;
• determining an area for each of the located regions;
• for a color region couple comprising a located first color region and a located second color region, generating a metric comprising:
• i) a distance between the located first color region centroid and the located second color region centroid, and ii) a ratio of areas of the located first color region and the located second color region;
• comparing the metric to a predetermined value to determine whether to process the color region couple to decode a 1D or 2D barcode.
