Abstract
A method for quantitatively measuring internal defects in an as-cast steel product includes optically scanning at least a portion of a surface of the steel product with a scanning device to create a digital image thereof, analyzing the digital image to calculate a quantitative value for an amount of internal defects therein, and normalizing the quantitative value to a rating according to a standardized scale.

A method for quantitatively measuring internal defects in an as-cast steel product, comprising:
- cutting the as-cast steel product into a plurality of sub-samples, the sub-samples each including a surface;
- optically scanning at least a portion of the surface of each of the sub-samples of the as-cast steel product with a scanning device to create a plurality of digital images thereof;
- analyzing the plurality of digital images to calculate a plurality of quantitative values for an amount of internal defects in each of the plurality of digital images;
- and
- normalizing the plurality of quantitative values to one or more ratings according to a standardized scale.
