Static coalescer, system and method therefor

A coalescence system comprising:

• a. a static mechanical droplet-coalescer comprising a channel including a set {Seg1, Seg2 . . . SegN} of at least 10 in-series segments disposed in series with respect to each other;
• and
• b. a multiphase dispersion comprising dispersed and continuous phases of first and second liquids flowing through the static mechanical droplet-coalescer and through all segments of Segment_Set such that upon entering the first segment Seg1 of set {Seg1, Seg2 . . . SegN} the multiphase dispersion comprises at least 20% v/v (by volume) first liquid,
• wherein each given segment Segi is characterized by a segment-specific-characteristic obstacle size bi, and wherein each given segment Segi has each of the following features:
• i. a ratio between a respective individual-segment length isl(Segi) for the given segment Segi and an respective individual segment average width isaw(Segi) for the given segment Segi is at least 10;
• ii. a ratio between bi and a respective individual segment average width thereof isaw(Segi) for the given segment Segi at most 0.7 and is at least 0.2;
• iii. at least 10 bi-sized obstacles are disposed within every individual segment Segi to form a respective set b_Obstacle_Set(Segi) of bi-sized obstacles for the given segment Segi;
• iv. flow throughout at least 90% of said given Segi segment is sufficiently turbulent such that a segment-specific Reynold's number ρ*IS VAVG (Segi)*bi/μ is at least 3000 where IS_VAVG (Segi) is the respective average velocity within the given segment;
• v. each bi-size obstacle of the set bi_Obstacle_Set(Segi) of bi-sized obstacles within the given segment Segi is distanced from its nearest neighboring bi-size obstacle within the channel by at least 0.75*bi and at most 2.5*bi;
• vi. a ratio (IS_VAVG (Segi)3/bi between (A) a cube of the respective average velocity IS_VAVG (Segi) within the given segment Segi and (B) bi is between 0.75 meter2/sec3 and 15 meters2/sec3,
• and wherein the multi-phase dispersion is passed through the static mechanical droplet-coalescer so that a total residence time collectively in all of the segments of {Seg1, Seg2 . . . SegN} is at least 30 seconds.
