Abstract
A sensing system for detecting degradation of a machine fluid is disclosed. The sensing system may comprise a tag having electrical contacts. The tag may be configured to transmit a wireless signal when the electrical contacts are in electrical communication. The sensing system may further comprise a dissolvable element separating the electrical contacts and obstructing electrical communication between the electrical contacts. The dissolvable element may be configured to dissolve and allow electrical communication between the electrical contacts when an acid content of the machine fluid reaches a level indicative of the degradation of the machine fluid.
Claims20
A method for detecting degradation of a machine fluid of a machine, comprising:
- placing a tag in contact with the machine fluid, the tag including electrical contacts and a dissolvable element between the electrical contacts and obstructing physical contact and electrical communication between the electrical contacts;
- permitting the dissolvable element to at least partially dissolve when an acid content of the machine fluid reaches a level indicative of the degradation of the machine fluid;
- initiating the electrical communication between the electrical contacts upon dissolution of the dissolvable element by allowing the electrical contacts to come into physical contact or by allowing the machine fluid to flow between the electrical contacts;
- and
- transmitting a wireless signal from the tag to a remote reader, the wireless signal transmitted by the tag indicating the degradation of the machine fluid.
A method of forming a filter for detecting degradation of a machine fluid of a machine, comprising:
- forming a housing having an inlet and an outlet;
- placing a filter medium in the housing;
- and
- placing a tag in the housing, the tag including electrical contacts and a dissolvable element between the electrical contacts and obstructing physical contact and electrical communication between the electrical contacts;
- wherein the dissolvable element is configured to at least partially dissolve when exposed to the machine fluid having an acid content at a level indicative of the degradation of the machine fluid;
- wherein the electrical communication between the electrical contacts is initiated upon dissolution of the dissolvable element by allowing the electrical contacts to come into physical contact or by allowing the machine fluid to flow between the electrical contacts;
- and
- wherein the tag is further configured to transmit a wireless signal from the tag to a remote reader, the wireless signal transmitted by the tag indicating the degradation of the machine fluid.
A method of forming a filter for detecting degradation of a machine fluid of a machine, comprising:
- forming a housing having an inlet and an outlet;
- placing a filter medium in the housing:
- configuring a first side of the filter to contain the machine fluid that has not been completely filtered through the filter medium;
- configuring a second side of the filter to contain the machine fluid that has been filtered through the filter medium;
- placing a tag in the housing of the filter at one of the first side and the second side, the tag having electrical contacts and being configured to transmit a wireless signal when the electrical contacts are in electrical communication;
- and
- placing a dissolvable element between the electrical contacts of the tag and obstructing physical contact between the electrical contacts and the electrical communication between the electrical contacts;
- wherein the dissolvable element is configured to at least partially dissolve when exposed to the machine fluid having an acid content at a level indicative of the degradation of the machine fluid;
- wherein the electrical communication between the electrical contacts is initiated upon dissolution of the dissolvable element by allowing the electrical contacts to come into physical contact or by allowing the machine fluid to flow between the electrical contacts;
- and
- wherein the tag is further configured to transmit a wireless signal from the tag to a remote reader, the wireless signal transmitted by the tag indicating the degradation of the machine fluid.
