There are provided compounds of Formula I: various compositions thereof and methods for their use in the inhibition of α-amylase.

A method for inhibiting a mammalian α-amylase, comprising administering a compound of Formula I or a salt thereof to a subject in need thereof,
- wherein,
- Q is H, OH or a monosaccharide;
- R1 is OH;
- R2 is H or OH;
- X is O or NH;
- and
- A is a disaccharide, a trisaccharide,
- a polyethylene glycol comprised of CH2CH2O subunits;
- a polyprenyl chain;
- or a 5-15 carbon alkyl;
- and
- wherein D is CH2, O, S, or NH.
