Abstract
Disclosed is a system and method for providing stable and reliable power to components on the top of a cell tower. The system performs a device discovery process to determine with Power Supply Units are connected to which Remote Radio Heads on the tower. It also provides several ways of characterizing the power cables and input capacitance to the Remote Radio Heads to provide optimal power to the Remote Radio Heads, including situations in which the power demand for the Remote Radio Heads increases, while obviating the need to replace the power cables with those of greater current capacity. Further, the system provides for stable power even in the presence of sensor instabilities and data dropouts.
Claims17
A system for controlling power to a cell tower, the system comprising:
- a plurality of tower top equipment units, each of the tower top equipment units having a remote radio head and a voltage sensor;
- a plurality of power supply units each coupled to a tower top equipment unit via a power cable;
- and
- a controller coupled to the voltage sensor of each radio head and the plurality of power supply units, wherein the controller is configured to,
- (1) receive voltage data from each voltage sensor,
- (2) prefilter the voltage data received from each voltage sensor,
- (3) compare the voltage data from each voltage sensor with a setpoint voltage,
- (4) issue a command voltage to each of the plurality of power supply units when the voltage data differs from the setpoint voltage, wherein the command voltage restores each of the plurality of power supply units to the setpoint value,
- (5) store the command voltage,
- (6) identify a set of remote radio head-power supply unit pairs comprising a remote radio head and a corresponding power supply unit, and
- (7) store the set of remote radio head-power supply units in non-volatile memory.
A system for controlling power to a cell tower, the system comprising:
- a plurality of tower top equipment units, each of the tower top equipment units having a remote radio head and a voltage sensor;
- a plurality of power supply units each coupled to a tower top equipment unit via a power cable;
- and
- a controller coupled to the voltage sensor of each remote radio head and the plurality of power supply units, wherein the controller is configured to,
- identify each of the remote radio heads and a corresponding power supply unit;
- create a set of remote radio head-power supply unit pairs;
- and
- store the set of remote radio head-power supply unit pairs in non-volatile memory.
