Adaptive physical layer interface control for a wireless local area network

A wireless access point (WAP) within a wireless network, the WAP comprising:

• a processor configured to:
• determine whether the wireless network is experiencing a first level of congestion or a second level of congestion in response to communicating a first communication of wireless network information over the wireless network,
• restructure a first group of PHY operational parameters of a plurality of PHY operational parameters to include a first PHY operational parameter from among a second group of PHY operational parameters of the plurality of PHY operational parameters in response to the wireless network experiencing the first level of congestion, and
• restructure the second group of PHY operational parameters to include a second PHY operational parameter from among the first group of PHY operational parameters in response to the wireless network experiencing a second level of congestion that is less than the first level of congestion;
• and
• a PHY device configured to utilize the second group of PHY operational parameters of a plurality of PHY operational parameters to communicate the first communication of wireless network information over the wireless network.

A method for managing congestion in a wireless network, the method comprising:

• determining, by a wireless access point (WAP), whether the wireless network is experiencing a first level of congestion or a second level of congestion;
• restructuring, by the WAP, a first group of physical layer (PHY) operational parameters of a plurality of PHY operational parameters to include a first PHY operational parameter from among a second group of PHY operational parameters of the plurality of PHY operational parameters in response to the wireless network experiencing the first level of congestion;
• restructuring, by the WAP, the second group of PHY operational parameters to include a second PHY operational parameter from among the first group of PHY operational parameters in response to the wireless network experiencing a second level of congestion that is less than the first level of congestion;
• and
• utilizing, by the WAP within the wireless network, the second group of PHY operational parameters to communicate a first communication of the wireless network information over the wireless network.
