Abstract
Techniques and apparatuses are described that enable full-duplex operation for radar sensing using a wireless communication chipset. A controller initializes or controls connections between one or more transceivers and antennas in the wireless communication chipset. This enables the wireless communication chipset to be used as a continuous-wave radar or a pulse-Doppler radar. By utilizing these techniques, the wireless communication chipset can be re-purposed or used for wireless communication or radar sensing.
Claims20
An apparatus comprising a hardware chipset, the hardware chipset comprising:
- a transmitter configured to:
- generate a radar signal in accordance with a full-duplex configuration of the hardware chipset;
- and
- generate a wireless communication signal in accordance with a half-duplex configuration of the hardware chipset;
- a receiver configured to receive a reflected version of the radar signal in accordance with the full-duplex configuration of the hardware chipset;
- a first switch coupled to the transmitter and configured to selectively connect the transmitter to a first antenna or disconnect the transmitter from the first antenna;
- and
- a second switch coupled to the receiver and configured to selectively connect the receiver to a second antenna or disconnect the receiver from the second antenna,
- the first switch and the second switch are jointly configured to:
- connect the transmitter to the first antenna and connect the receiver to the second antenna in accordance with the full-duplex configuration of the hardware chipset;
- and
- connect the transmitter to the first antenna and disconnect the receiver from the second antenna in accordance with the half-duplex configuration of the hardware chipset.
A method for operating a hardware chipset, the hardware chipset comprising a transmitter, a receiver, a first switch coupled to the transmitter, and a second switch coupled to the receiver, the method comprising:
- operating the hardware chipset in a full-duplex configuration for radar sensing, the operating comprising:
- generating, via the transmitter, a radar signal;
- connecting, via the first switch, the transmitter to a first antenna to enable the radar signal to propagate through space;
- connecting, via the second switch, the receiver to a second antenna to enable reception of a reflected version of the radar signal;
- and
- receiving, via the receiver, the reflected version of the radar signal during at least a portion of time that the radar signal is generated using the transmitter;
- and
- operating the hardware chipset in a half-duplex configuration for wireless communication, the operating comprising:
- generating, via the transmitter, a wireless communication signal;
- connecting, via the first switch, the transmitter to the first antenna to enable the wireless communication signal to propagate through space;
- and
- disconnecting, via the second switch, the receiver from the second antenna.
