System and method for estimating cardiovascular fitness of a person

A method for estimating a maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) of a subject, the method comprising:

• determining an activity classification based on an activity signal;
• determining a heart rate feature based on a heart rate signal;
• selecting an estimation model using the activity classification and heart rate feature;
• determining, using the selected estimation model, an available heart rate feature that is based on the heart rate signal;
• estimating the VO2max of the subject based on the determined available heart rate feature and the selected estimation model;
• and
• outputting, on a display, information indicative of the estimated VO2max.

A device configured to estimate a maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) of a subject, the device comprising:

• an activity sensor configured to receive an activity signal;
• a heart rate sensor configured to receive a heart rate signal;
• a display;
• and
• a processor configured to:
• determine an activity classification based on the activity signal;
• determine a heart rate feature based on the heart rate signal;
• select an estimation model using the activity classification and heart rate feature;
• determine, using the selected estimation model, an available heart rate feature that is based on the heart rate signal;
• estimate the VO2max of the subject based on the determined available heart rate feature and the selected estimation model;
• and
• output, on the display, information indicative of the estimated VO2max.
