Abstract
Methods and devices are provided for preparing and implanting tissue scaffolds. Various embodiments of scribing tools are provided that are configured to mark one or more predetermined shapes around a defect site in tissue. The shape or shapes marked in tissue can be used to cut a tissue scaffold having a shape that matches the shape or shapes marked in tissue. In one embodiment, the scribing tool used to mark a shape in tissue can also be used to cut the tissue scaffold.
Claims18
A surgical method, comprising:
- advancing an outer shaft of a surgical device through a first tissue of a patient to position a distal end of the shaft within the patient, the outer shaft being advanced through the first tissue with a longitudinal axis of the outer shaft angled relative to the first tissue, the outer shaft having a passageway extending therethrough;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, adjusting the outer shaft to change the angle of the longitudinal axis of the outer shaft relative to the first tissue;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, advancing an inner shaft through the passageway of the outer shaft and engaging a second tissue of the patient with an extension extending distally from a body of the inner shaft, wherein the extension engages the second tissue without penetrating into a bone underlying the second tissue;
- and
- with the distal end of the inner shaft engaging the second tissue of the patient, moving the outer shaft relative to the inner shaft and thereby cutting the second tissue with the outer shaft.
A surgical method comprising:
- advancing an outer shaft of a surgical device through a first tissue of a patient to position a distal end of the shaft within the patient, the outer shaft being advanced through the first tissue with a longitudinal axis of the outer shaft angled relative to the first tissue, the outer shaft having a passageway extending therethrough;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, adjusting the outer shaft to change the angle of the longitudinal axis of the outer shaft relative to the first tissue;
- with the distal end of the outer shall positioned within the patient, advancing an inner shaft through the passageway of the outer shaft and engaging a second tissue the patient with an extension extending distally from a body of the inner shaft;
- with the distal end the inner shaft engaging the second tissue of the patient, moving the outer shaft relative to the inner shaft and thereby cutting the second tissue with the outer shaft;
- and
- moving the extension from a first position, in which the extension is contained within the body of the inner shaft, to a second position, in which the extension extends distally beyond a distal end of the body of the inner shaft.
A surgical method, comprising:
- advancing an outer shaft of a surgical device through a first tissue of a patient to position a distal end of the shaft within the patient, the outer shaft being advanced through the first tissue with a longitudinal axis of the outer shaft angled relative to the first tissue, the outer shaft having a passageway extending therethrough;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, adjusting the outer shaft to change the angle of the longitudinal axis of the outer shaft relative to the first tissue;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, advancing an inner shaft through the passageway of the outer shaft such that a second tissue of the patient is engaged by the inner shaft, wherein a handle of the inner shaft limits a distance that the inner shaft can move distally beyond a distal end of the outer shaft;
- and
- with the inner shaft engaging the second tissue of the patient, moving the outer shaft relative to the inner shaft and thereby cutting the second tissue with the outer shaft;
- wherein the outer shaft has a handle;
- the handle of the inner shaft has a diameter larger than a diameter of the passageway of the outer shaft;
- and
- the handle of the inner shaft abutting the handle of the outer shaft limits the distance that the inner shaft can move distally beyond the distal end of the outer shaft.
A surgical method, comprising:
- advancing an outer shaft of a surgical device through a first tissue of a patient to position a distal end of the shaft within the patient, the outer shaft being advanced through the first tissue with a longitudinal axis of the outer shaft angled relative to the first tissue, the outer shaft having a passageway extending therethrough;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, adjusting the outer shaft to change the angle of the longitudinal axis of the outer shaft relative to the first tissue;
- with the distal end of the outer shaft positioned within the patient, advancing an inner shaft through the passageway of the outer shaft and contacting a second tissue of the patient with the inner shaft without the inner shaft penetrating into a bone underlying the second tissue;
- and
- with the inner shaft contacting the second tissue of the patient without the inner shaft penetrating into the bone, moving the outer shaft relative to the inner shaft and thereby cutting the second tissue with the outer shaft.
