Abstract
Kneading elements, extrusion apparatus, and methods of manufacturing honeycomb bodies are described herein. A kneading element (1802) has an inner surface (1804) defining an opening (1806) configured to couple the kneading element (1802) to a shaft (46,48). The kneading element (1802) also has a continuous closed curve elliptical outer surface (1808). The opening (1806) has an axis (1814) that is off-center with respect to a geometric center (1816) of the kneading element (1802) as viewed in a transverse plane perpendicular to the axis.
Claims20
A kneading element for a ceramic batch screw extruder machine, the kneading element comprising:
- an inner surface defining an opening configured to couple the kneading element to a shaft;
- and
- a continuous closed curve elliptical outer surface defining a single flight of the kneading element.
A ceramic batch screw extruder machine, the machine comprising:
- at least one barrel;
- a shaft disposed at least partially within the at least one barrel;
- and
- at least one kneading element disposed along the shaft and the at least one kneading element comprising (i) an inner surface defining an opening configured to couple the kneading element to a shaft and (ii) a continuous closed curve elliptical outer surface defining a single flight of the kneading element,
- wherein the opening comprises an axis that is off-center with respect to a geometric center of the kneading element as viewed in a transverse plane perpendicular to the axis.
A method of making a honeycomb body, comprising:
- kneading a ceramic batch in a screw extruder machine;
- and
- extruding the batch through a die to form the honeycomb body, wherein the screw extruder machine comprises a kneading element that comprises (i) an inner surface defining an opening configured to couple the kneading element to a shaft;
- and (ii) a continuous closed curve elliptical outer surface defining a single flight of the kneading element.
