Abstract
Methods for the in-film polymerization of a second polymer in a film of a first polymer are provided. The methods integrate polymer synthesis with simultaneous block copolymer selfassembly, providing a route for on-demand nanopattern manipulation in polymeric films.
Claims22
A method of forming a polymer film, the method comprising:
- exposing a polymer film comprising a first polymer to a vapor comprising polymerizable monomers, wherein the first polymer is a block copolymer that is assembled into at least two domains in the polymer film and the polymerizable monomers diffuse into, and swell, the polymer film;
- and
- polymerizing the polymerizable monomers into a second polymer within the polymer film.
A method of forming a polymer film, the method comprising:
- exposing a polymer film comprising a first polymer and having a radical initiator embedded therein to a vapor comprising polymerizable monomers, wherein the polymerizable monomers diffuse into, and swell, the polymer film;
- and
- polymerizing the polymerizable monomers into a second polymer within the polymer film by exposing the polymer film to a stimulus that activates the embedded radical initiator, inducing the polymerization of the polymerizable monomers.
A method of forming a polymer film, the method comprising:
- exposing a polymer film comprising a first polymer to a vapor comprising polymerizable monomers, wherein the polymerizable monomers diffuse into, and swell, the polymer film;
- exposing the polymer film to a vapor comprising a radical initiator, wherein the radical initiator diffuses into the polymer film;
- and
- polymerizing the polymerizable monomers into a second polymer within the polymer film by exposing the polymer film to a stimulus that activates the radical initiator, inducing the polymerization of the polymerizable monomers.
