Server-side configuration variables in feature testing

An apparatus, comprising:

• a memory to store state information;
• a processing device operatively coupled to the memory, the processing device to:
• receive a request to download digital content of a third-party content provider, wherein the digital content comprises a feature and a feature variable placeholder associated with the feature;
• determine that a client device associated with the request is to receive the feature based on a feature flag associated with the feature;
• based on the determination, select a feature variable value of a plurality of feature variable values to provide in place of the feature variable placeholder with the digital content, wherein each of the plurality of the feature variable values comprises a different variation of a portion of the digital content;
• and
• provide the selected feature variable value to the third-party content provider to be displayed with the digital content.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to:

• receive a request to download digital content of a third-party content provider, wherein the digital content comprises a feature and a feature variable placeholder associated with the feature;
• determine that a client device associated with the request is to receive the feature based on a feature flag associated with the feature;
• based on the determination, select, by the processing device, a feature variable value of a plurality of feature variable values to provide in place of the feature variable placeholder with the digital content, wherein each of the plurality of the feature variable values comprises a different variation of a portion of the digital content;
• and
• provide the selected feature variable value to the third-party content provider to be displayed with the digital content.
