Authorized off-line access methods and apparatus

A method for an authorization system comprising:

• performing a pre-authorization process comprising:
• transmitting with a transceiver of a smart device, an identifier associated with a user of the smart device to a remote authentication server;
• determining in the remote authentication server a pre-authorization condition and identifiers associated with a plurality of reader devices the user is pre-authorized to interact with in response to the identifier associated with the user, and a plurality of policies;
• forming in the remote authentication server, a data packet comprising the identifiers associated with the plurality of reader devices in response to the pre-authorization condition;
• forming in the remote authentication server, a pre-authorization token in response to the identifier and to the pre-authorization condition;
• receiving with the transceiver of the smart device the data packet and the pre-authorization token from the remote authentication server;
• and
• storing in a secure storage of the smart device the data packet and the pre-authorization token;
• and thereafter
• performing a run-time process comprising:
• receiving with the transceiver of the smart device, an identifier associated with a reader device;
• determining with a processor of the smart device an authorized reader condition when the identifiers associated with the plurality of reader devices includes the identifier associated with the reader device;
• forming with the processor of the smart device a reader token in response to the pre-authorization token stored in the secure storage, and the authorized reader condition;
• transmitting with the transceiver of the smart device the reader token to the reader device;
• determining with a processor of the reader device an authorized user condition in response to the reader token;
• and
• directing with the processor of the reader device a peripheral device to perform a user-perceptible action for the user in response to the authorized user condition.
