Abstract
In an optical network having a terrestrial terminal and an open cable interface (OCI) connecting a submarine cable to a terrestrial cable, the OCI may include a filter positioned on an optical path between the terrestrial cable and the submarine cable and configured to pass first communication signals of a first frequency band, and filter out secondary signals of a second frequency band that does not overlap with the first frequency band. The secondary signals may be looped back to the terrestrial terminal. The terrestrial terminal may detect the looped back secondary signals, and in response, determine the presence of the OCI and that the supervisory signals were rerouted by the OCI.
Claims20
A system comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- memory in communication with the one or more processors, wherein the memory contains instructions configured to cause the one or more processors to:
- operate according to one of (i) a first configuration for communications with adjacent terrestrial terminals or (ii) a second configuration for communications with adjacent optical cable interfaces (OCI) that interface submarine cables with a terrestrial network;
- transmit a supervisory signal from a terminal of the terrestrial network to an adjacent terminal via a terrestrial optical cable;
- detect the supervisory signal being reflected back to the terminal;
- in response to detection of the supervisory signal being reflected back to the terminal, determine that the adjacent terminal is an OCI;
- and
- in response to determining that the adjacent terminal is an OCI, select the second configuration for communications with the adjacent terminal.
A method comprising:
- operating, by one or more processors, according to one of (i) a first configuration for communications with adjacent terrestrial terminals or (ii) a second configuration for communications with adjacent optical cable interfaces (OCI) that interface submarine cables with a terrestrial network;
- transmitting, by the one or more processors, a supervisory signal from a terminal of a terrestrial network via a terrestrial optical cable;
- detecting, by the one or more processors, the supervisory signal being reflected back to the terminal;
- in response to detection of the supervisory signal being reflected back to the terminal, determining, by the one or more processors, that the adjacent terminal is an OCI;
- and
- in response to determining that the adjacent terminal is an OCI, selecting, by the one or more processors, the second configuration for communications with the adjacent terminal.
