Abstract
Remote deposit of checks can be facilitated by a financial institution. A customer's general purpose computer and image capture device may be leveraged to capture an image of a check and deliver the image to financial institution electronics. Additional data for the transaction may be collected as necessary. The transaction can be automatically accomplished utilizing the images and data thus acquired.
Claims18
A computing device for processing a remote deposit of a check, the computing device comprising:
- processing circuitry;
- memory having stored thereon executable instructions that, when executed by the processing circuitry, cause the processing circuitry to perform operations including:
- download an application to a mobile device of a user, the application provided by a bank and configured to control check deposit by causing the mobile device of the customer to:
- instruct the user to have a digital camera take a digital image of at least portions of a check;
- give an instruction to assist the user in placing the digital camera at a proper distance away from the check for taking the digital image;
- present the digital image of at least portions of the check to the user after the digital image is taken with the digital camera;
- and
- using a wireless network, transmit a copy of the digital image from the mobile device of the user to the system;
- receive the digital image depicting at least portions of the check transmitted by the user for the remote deposit of the check;
- detect an image format of the digital image;
- determine the digital image is stored in a first image format;
- convert the digital image into a second image format, wherein an image quality of the first image format is greater than an image quality of the second image format;
- apply optical character recognition to the digital image;
- determine an amount for the remote deposit of the check based on the optical character recognition applied to the digital image;
- compare the determined amount against a customer-entered amount;
- optically read a magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) line depicted in the digital image;
- determine a routing number from the optically read MICR line;
- perform duplicate check detection on the check depicted in the digital image based at least in part on information obtained via the optical character recognition applied to the digital image;
- determine the digital image is suitable for creating a substitute check and sufficient to go forward with the deposit;
- and
- accepting the digital image for check deposit in place of the check depicted in the digital image.
A method for controlling a computing device to process a remote deposit of a check, the method comprising:
- processing circuitry executing executable instructions stored in a memory for performing first operations of:
- downloading an application to a mobile device of a user, the application provided by a bank and configured to control check deposit by causing the mobile device of the customer to perform operations of:
- instructing the user to have a digital camera take a digital image of at least portions of a check;
- giving an instruction to assist the user in placing the digital camera at a proper distance away from the check for taking the digital image;
- presenting the digital image of at least portions of the check to the user after the digital image is taken with the digital camera;
- and
- using a wireless network, transmitting a copy of the digital image from the mobile device of the user to the system;
- receiving the digital image depicting at least portions of the check transmitted by the user for the remote deposit of the check;
- detecting an image format of the digital image;
- determining the digital image is stored in a first image format;
- converting the digital image into a second image format, wherein an image quality of the first image format is greater than an image quality of the second image format;
- applying optical character recognition to the digital image;
- determining an amount for the remote deposit of the check based on the optical character recognition applied to the digital image;
- comparing the determined amount against a customer-entered amount;
- optically reading a magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) line depicted in the digital image;
- determining a routing number from the optically read MICR line;
- performing duplicate check detection on the check depicted in the digital image based at least in part on information obtained via the optical character recognition applied to the digital image;
- determining the digital image is suitable for creating a substitute check and sufficient to go forward with the deposit;
- and
- accepting the digital image for check deposit in place of the check depicted in the digital image.
