Abstract
Dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof, is used to induce differentiation of glial cells and neurons. The cell differentiation induction of dextran sulfate has positive effects in subjects suffering from neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, demyelinating diseases, neuro ischemic diseases and neuromuscular diseases.
Claims17
A method for treating glutamate excitotoxicity in a subject suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and exhibiting glutamate excitotoxicity, the method comprising administering dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or below 10,000 Da to the subject suffering from ALS and exhibiting glutamate excitotoxicity to treat glutamate excitotoxicity in neurons of the subject.
A method for protecting neurons from oxidative stress in a subject suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and exhibiting oxidative stress, the method comprising administering dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or below 10,000 Da to the subject suffering from ALS and exhibiting oxidative stress to protect neurons from oxidative stress induced by ALS and causing mitochondrial dysfunction in the neurons.
A method for restoring metabolic hemostasis in a subject suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and exhibiting impaired metabolic hemostasis, the method comprising administering dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or below 10,000 Da to the subject suffering from ALS and exhibiting impaired metabolic hemostasis to restore metabolic hemostasis in neurons in the subject.
A method for treating neuroinflammation associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the method comprising administering dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, to a subject suffering from ALS and exhibiting neuroinflammation to treat the neuroinflammation, wherein the dextran sulfate, or the pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, has a number average molecular weight (Mn) as measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy within an interval of 1850 and 3500 Da.
A method for treating neuroinflammation, the method comprising administering dextran sulfate, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or below 10,000 Da to a subject suffering from neuroinflammation to treat the neuroinflammation.
