Abstract
Among others, the present invention provides novel methods for extending lifespan or improving healthspan in a mammal, which include administration to the mammal of a composition containing a therapeutically effective amount of ergothioneine, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, acid, ester, analog or derivative thereof.

A method for extending lifespan or improving healthspan of a mammal in need thereof, comprising administration to the mammal of a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of ergothioneine, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt,
- wherein the composition extending lifespan or improving healthspan is by regulation of autophagy,
- wherein regulation of autophagy comprises downregulating cpr-1 gene expression.
